RepRapPro Mendel or Ecksbot

My first build, what must it be? I have joined a group of skilled guys busy with their own 3D printers. Very keen to help me build my own. They suggested that I start with the Ecksbot 3D printer (http://reprap.org/wiki/Ecksbot) but at this stage I am not sure if this is the correct way to go. They even supplied me with all the printed plastic parts for the Ecksbot (at a price) - it was already printed when I enquired about the parts.
Personally it looks as if the RepRapPro Mendel (http://www.reprappro.com/documentation/RepRapPro_Tricolour) is going to be a better choice. Both of these printers can be modified as a tricolour option.
As a newbie, I am not sure which way to go. Any suggestions on what I must choose? What will be the best model? I first want to start with the single printhead and later on do the tricolour. Anything I have to look out for that could be a problem?
Thanks
Heino
