From the San Jose Mercury News a piece about the potential impact of Elon Musk's decision to change Tesla's patent policy.

I found this bit interesting (emphasis mine)...

In fact, more than $20 billion in venture capital investments would have likely been made in the past five years "but for (patent) litigation brought by frequent litigators," according to a recent study by a professor of marketing at the MIT Sloan School of Management and funded by the Computers and Communication Industry Association, a tech policy group.

With that kind of money involved this could be the kind of thing that starts wholesale patent reform,

It is sort of a catch-22. With no patent protection whatsoever, venture capital will dry up because investors will not have anything tangible to protect their initial investments from cloning.....
