As far as I am aware, the Ethernet shield is basically a serial to Ethernet converter. Unfortunately the pins used by it are used for the sd card if I am not mistaken.
I have my printer both WiFi and Ethernet enabled with a tiny tplink router with ddwrt and usb/ip on there. It worked fine for me. However I would not use it to upload firmware, it is touch and go to do that.
