gears not grabbing filament

gears not grabbing filament

i try to load new filament and the gears wont grab the filament and if i can get it to grab the filament it skips while printing.like the gears go in reverse so im at the end of my rope so any help will do please.

Heat the nozzle up to the correct temperature (190 for PLA, 230? for ABS). Try to push filament through by hand. You should be able to do that. If you can't, then you have a problem in your hot end.

i did that and its still not grabbing it

It sounds like you have two separate issues. For the gear not grabbing you may need to increase the tension of the idler pushing against your gear. This is most likely done by tightening the screw(s) adjacent to your drive gear. Furthermore the teeth on the drive gear may be too worn and not sharp enough to grab onto filament. Buy a new drive gear or clean the gear of plastic build up.

The skipping is most likely insufficient current. Increase the voltage on the stepper driver. If problem is still present a new drive motor/extruder setup may be needed
