So how do you know if the 3d printer your building will work fine with a nema 17 or if you need to opt for a high torque 17 or a Nema 23
without testing smiling smiley

I am in the process of building a 12"x24" CoreXY machine using openbuilds vslot rail an wheels. but im concerned that going with a 400 step Nema 17 wont have enough torque.
but i want the positioning ability

I use this site to calculate the required torque: [www.orientalmotor.com]

Once you know the required torque, you shop for the motor (and maybe the driver and power supply).

NEMA-17 motors go up to about 100 oz-in (0.7 N m). If you need more torque than that, go to NEMA-23.

Based on my guesstimates using that calculator I need 26 oz/in of torque
and the stepper i want to use makes 66 oz/in torque, at full power

Thanks for the link. makes me feel more comfortable.
