I have just got a LJ18A3-8-Z/BX NPN normally open inductive proximity sensor and i've have looked at a lot of tutorials about wiring it up but ive confused myself looking at my current setup where ive got the signal pin and ground pin to a micro switch. Is it ok to be putting a voltage on the signal pin ?

Thanks Nikki

As long as you don't exceed the voltage rating for the pin. Examples: RAMPS: 5vdc; DUE: 3.3vdc; Duet/DuetWifi: 3.3vdc.

When I used one, I used a 12vdc relay board that had a selectable high/low signal setting, so it would act just like a switch.

Like stephenrc said, 5v on z min max.

I use 2 10k resistors myself, works fine.
