What is the best, affordable, soldering iron?

So I have a new kit on the way and I'm totally excited. I'm going to have to do a fair bit of soldering for this project and the $15 Home Depot version I have just doesn't cut it, so I turn to the experts.

Does anyone have suggestions on a good soldering iron that doesn't break the bank? I would like something that will last.

Thanks!

Good looking knockoff of the Hakko irons we use at work. One of my friends says they work nearly as well, and sparkfun seems to like them a lot.

Wow, that is a good price. I've been looking at Hakko 888 and 936 based on recommendations from some experienced users. That one is a 936 clone apparently.

Thanks!

get a gas one like this [www.maplin.co.uk], fast heatup time, hot knife, hotair attachment and blowtorch!

That gas one will do more harm than good for soldering circuits.

Temperature control!

Being able to maintain a constant and known temperature is paramount to soldering many surface mount components. For general purpose soldering of plain wires it will work perfectly fine, but for SMT and some temp sensitive through hole components it will eventually get you into trouble. (dead parts).

They work really well for a lot of things, but I can not recommend them for assembling a circuit board.

I have had an Antex for many years, silicone wire and like holding a pencil, which makes it nice to use.

I got the Hakko 888. They had it at Fry's Electronics for $84.99, not bad.

Cheers.
