Probing a metal surface with a 3d printer

Hi reprappers,
recently I had the necessity to do a 3d scan of a surface, i discovered a couple of python scripts on github which implement this functionality, the one i choose and which I'm enhancing is:

[github.com]

(Ill fork this repository and/or submit a pr when the code is more than a draft)

I've added some routines to scan a matrix point by point using the bltouch, however, bltouch depth is limited, i'm looking for an alternative method, what about closing an electric circuit giving ground to the object pulling up the input and using a steel needle installed on the head to close the circuit ?

Wondering if input triggering would be fast enough to have small z errors and no mechanical stress on the mechanics.

Other (simple) alternatives, hints ?

thank you!
