Anyone built a cooldrv stepper driver?

Anyone built a cooldrv stepper driver?
December 28, 2013 02:51AM
I recently built a set of cooldrv stepper drivers with the drv8825 drivers and tested them on my sanguinololu and ramps electronics and with both, the motors turn much slower and seem to grind / vibrate and make a horrible sound. I tried removing jumpers to change micro stepping settings but this did nothing.

These boards were described as being drop in replacement for pololu drivers but mine don't seem to work. Do I need to change some settings in the firmware? I am using sprinter.

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Not quite drop in... you need to set jumper MS3 only to get 1/16 stepping, if that is what you had before The symptoms you describe are all consistent with incompatible jumper settings.

Then you will need to adjust current suitable for your motors.

Thanks for the response, I will try that in a couple of days when I get home.

Is that true for sanguinololu, ramps and gen7?

I will try and post my success (or not) next week.

It's true for sanguinololu and RAMPS, I checked the PCB layout. Sometimes the jumpers are numbered 0 1 2. So if there is no MS3 then it's probably MS2.

Thanks again,

Looking just now I note that with all jumpers in place I had it set for 1/32 micro stepping and when I removed all jumpers it was set to full step but neither worked. Do you have to tell the firmware what micro stepping you are using and these have to match? If do, can I also select 1/32 micro stepping and leave all jumpers in?

Yes it is essential the firmware matches the jumper settings. You can change the firmware settings to match what you are using instead. That will probably be in a config file somewhere, I'm not familiar with sprinter though.

Although, it is sometimes better to only change one thing at a time, especially if you are proving out freshly made hardware smiling smiley

Great, thanks for your help, much appreciated, I will have a play around.

One other thought, do you think I need heat sinks?

These chips are supposed to capable of driving something like 3A and I will only be using <1A so will they be ok without?
