Marlin RAMPS 1.2x not turning motors

Hello all,
Could someone please tell me what to set to have a stepper motor on X and Y turn properly?
Currently, the wiring is good, but the motor is moving back and forth.

I've tried reducing the acceleration parameter, still doesn't work
I've tried reducing the motor speed, still doesn't work

I'm sure i've missed something, but not sure what

The board is RAMPS 1.2 derivative of my own, where all I have done is have the MAX6675 mounted on the board.
It is currently the only thing that works well. and the extruder motor.

I think I have solved my mystery.
I used the default vaules from Sprinter to give me a ball park figure to calibrate my old machine with.
Believe it or not, my old Sells Mendel still worked - okay confused smiley for the past 2 years
Last year I started working on my own Pololu shield, before Johnny, but life got in the way and it's 1.5 years later, board done, and it was time to replace - wait for it.

Gen3 Makerbot electronics. Yep those antiquate half step drivers.

Marlin is in, but had trouble finding new figures for X, Y and Z axes
The 5D Interpreter firmware defnition for Mega defaults don't work with Marlin
Now am looking for values for the X, Y and Z axes which work with the 9 tooth pulley
Looks to be around the ~50 mark.

If anybody has these values, could you please share them?
