Calibration: Slic3r and Cura
August 15, 2012 12:11PM
Hi all,
i'm playing with a Prusa:
- RAMPS 1.2 with sprinter fw
- pronterface
- Slic3r 0.9.1

Results were not good, also changing many params (nozzle, filament, temperature, etc), following many guides and suggestions around the web :-D

Then i've found out Cura:
[github.com]
I was surprised of the (quite immediate) good result.

So i've tried to replicate the Cura configuration in Slic3r, without success.

For example:
- euro coin calibration (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:28414 - 50 eurocent)
on the right, sliced with Cura, on the left with Slic3r:
(top) [lh3.googleusercontent.com]
(bottom) [lh6.googleusercontent.com]

- open hardware keychain (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:21596)
Slic3r:
[lh4.googleusercontent.com]
Cura:
[lh5.googleusercontent.com]

I attach Cura config and slic3r config.
What's wrong with slic3r?

Thanks!
Regards
M

Just from fast overview

1. looks like low temperature for me (try increase +5,+10+15 etc) (thermistors are +- several percents)

2. layer_height = 0.15
extremly low (usually 0,25-0,4) start with 0.4 then try lower numbers.

1. i'm using PLA

2. i'm now using a 0.20 layer heigh, but i'm going to try also up to 0.40 mm

Just curious, since cura worked, why not just use cura? Why shift back to slic3r?

it seems to me that slic3r is the middle solution between Cura and Skeinforge.
Cura it's quite basic and it's ok to start, but Slic3r has more parameters...
