Introducing the 3DMakerWorld Artifex 3D Printer

Hello, everyone here,

We would like to introduce our recent product, the 3DMakerWorld Artifex 3D Printer [www.3dmakerworld.com].

The printer was designed based on the frame of MendelMax 2.0 with the goal to
  • Be reprapable/hackable,
  • Address current MM2 issues,
  • Add neat features towards completeness and aesthetics, and
  • Provide accurate, high-quality, and easy-to-follow documents.

After months of hard working and efforts, we are glad to say that we have reached our goal. Here are some highlights:
  • Reprapability and rigidity: When moving from metal plates to plastics, one big concern was the rigidity. Direct print-out of current MM2 design in plastics won’t have enough strength. Our approaches to achieve the rigidity include:
    • All connection vertices or plates were designed or redesigned, either in thickness or shape, to provide enough strength for installation.
    • Corner brackets were used in all four corners of upper frame.
    • The triangular support was redesigned to provide more direct support to the top of upper frame.

  • Vibration: When printing with the original MM2 Y-axis design, we observed large vibration at high speed, especially for short distance printing requiring quick direction change. Such vibration also created lots of noise and caused quality problems in the finished parts. Majority of such vibration was caused by the large gap between the Y-axis rail and its carriages. After upgrading the Y-axis carriages to ones with adjustable clearance capability, we have been happily enjoying smooth and quiet printing since then.

  • Cable management: We like the overall structure and frame set-up of MM2, but we do think there are lots of details need to be improved, especially the cable management. By leveraging open channels of aluminum extrusions, optimizing the placement of components, designing printed parts for wire routing, and adding cable clips, we are presenting a neat and clean machine for you to work with.

  • Extruder: The Artifex’s extruder is based on the design of MakerGear M2 using a high performance and compact geared motor, Kysan 1040222. The design was modified for fan mounting, cable management, filament guide tube connection, and easier printing. The extruder is fully compatible with both MakerGear and J-Head hot-ends. The current fan duct fits with the MakerGear hot end, and a version for J-Head will come in the future.

  • Heated Build Platform: We selected a 24V silicone rubber heater for its fast heating performance and good durability to prevent the peel-off issue found in thin Kapton heaters. It is also much easier to attach the silicone rubber heater to the heat spreader.

  • Documentations: Coming with the Artifex 3D Printer are detailed and well organized documents for you to build and use this printer. Step-by-step instructions are provided with high-quality pictures to ensure a successful building and printing experience.

There are many other neat details which we cannot cover here, but feel free to ask if you want to know more about any particular one. You can found more information about the Artifex 3D Printer at [www.3dmakerworld.com], and from documents at [www.3dmakerworld.com]. The design of Artifex 3D Printer is completely open source, and all of its design files are now available at: [github.com].

As an open source 3D printer, the 3DMakerWorld Artifex was designed with the inspiration from many others' work in the open source 3D printing community. Please see our acknowledgements at [www.3dmakerworld.com].

I think you will find that most users of this forum are not big fans of blatant advertising.............
