One of the big problems of 3D printing is the tendency when printing onto a surface like wood or foamboard is the tendency of the printed layer to curl up and away from the surface at the corners. Vik tends to put little feed to stop the curling and I tend to print onto a HDPE raft that I print before I begin to actually print the object all in an effort to stop this curling.

It just occurred to me that if I were to print this same layer in the vertical plane instead of the horizontal (I've done this with the shot glass I printed a month ago) you don't see any curling.

Why is this?

Both layers are printed a bit at a time, yet one curls and the other does not.
