If we need to tell when the alloy has melted in the new design of metal
print head, we could always test for an electrical connection between
the incoming alloy and the heated head.

The breaking of that contact might be the useful signal. It's quite
simple to push the rod down to melt it, but in withdrawing it you have
to work against atmospheric pressure.
