RAMPS1.4/Marlin abnormal motor behavior?

I'm a relative beginner at this, so forgive me if I'm missing something extremely obvious. I have a RAMPS 1.4 with a slightly modified Marlin firmware. The modifications were to disable the temperature sensors and to enable the second extruder driver.

I have run into the following problem while testing with Pronterface:
When I send a "G1 E1" or "G1 X1 E1" command, all the motors move as expected. However, when I add in a second stage movement command such as "G1 X1 Y1 E1" command, the E stepper motor barely moves when compared to sending a "G1 E1" or "G1 X1 E1" command. The same is seen if I substitute Y for X.

I have no idea what is going on and any help would be appreciated. We are planning on driving syringe pumps with the E stepper motor(s).

If you re-flash with standard Marlin, do you see the same behavior?

Turns out that I needed to specify a feedrate in my gcode command.
