Broken belt
October 26, 2013 07:41PM
Over my last couple of prints, I noticed a decrease in the quality of prints...
Today I realized what it was! Looks like the wires in the 2.5t belt have failed.
Tried tightening it, but it quickly stretched again.

Looking at the belt, you can't really see the broken lines, but there is two
wires that you can feel as you run your fingers down the length of the belt.

So looks like I'm outa commission till new belts come in sad smiley
Sigh... (this is on the X)

Maybe I had the belts too tight?

Strange, where did you get you belts from? The only time I have had the wires fail is on the original Mendel, which bent the X belt both ways. It would fail in about 100 hours. Then I fitted the revised X motor bracket which didn't have the belt doubling back on itself and never had to replace the belt again. I scrapped the machine a few months ago and it was printing almost continuously from 2010.

I don't think it will be a tension problem. More likely the belt was too stiff to bend round 16 tooth pulleys. I now recommend Brecoflex as it is more flexible. However I think belts and bearings, etc, will still have a finite lifetime of a few years of continuous use.
