Replacing M5 threaded rod

Replacing M5 threaded rod
February 27, 2014 07:20AM
My M5 threaded rod has been worn and I have acquired a M5 A4 and M6 A4 with a long/large nut (40 mm) for the M6, The nut is usually used it to combine the rods.

The problem now is how do I measure the rise in an M5 and M6 so I can regulate Y-axis or is it a bad idea to replace the M5 whith a M6 rod.

It's not necesserily a bad idea. The nuts you're refering to are called tube nuts i think. What is the pitch of the M6 rod. Is it standard metric rod? If so the pitch will be 1mm instead of the 0.8mm pitch on a standard M5 rod. So you would have to alter the step ratio on the Z motor accordingly. I'll have a look at what the code is for this and get back to you.

Right i've had a look and it is the M92 command. I think you should be able to put it in the config.g file.

It will be
M92 Zsteps per mm

If you find the original steps and scale it to whatever new size of rod you put in. I think in your case it will be 5mm pitch/6mm pitch so 0.8/1=0.8.

Another thread that states the Z steps per mm

So your new value would be M92 Z3200.

I may be wrong, and if i am please correct me as its the only way i'll learn.

I Found this
Information about metric threaded rod

Jy oc hx you are right on the nose, about M5 pitch is 0.800 and M6 pitch is 1.000 smiling smiley

So now I will make an new Z-to-X axis thing, to take the new coupling-nut.

I will post the stl file later.

That will take a while, I am waiting for a new Duet from RepRapPro.
