Hi All,

Here is another Ormerod Mod to provide extra cooling, this 3-part bracket simply replaces the lower of the two Z bearing mounting brackets and allows for an additional cooling fan to be mounted on the adjustable arm, i have mine directed at the center of the print bed, as the print progresses the fan is raised with the Z access. It is currently designed to hold a 50mm fan, however it is easily adjusted to hold a 40mm or 60mm fan.

I have attached the SCAD, and STL's for each part, you can also always find the latest version in my OrmerodUpgrade github repository (see signature)

These are also on thingiverse here thing:312105

Enjoy smiling smiley

great to have you back,

This looks good, how much difference does it make to your prints?

How did you connect it? Is it controlled by the firmware?

Paul

Hi Paul,

I've been using a second fan for a while, and it makes a big difference to overhangs, bridges, thin, tall or small quick layered prints, but not much benefit for large prints.

There is already connections available on the duet to attach a second fan, and dc42 has enabled this in the firmware. M106 S255 will switch on the second fan at full speed, M107 will switch it off.
I have added a M107 to the start of my config.g as the fan is ON by default on startup.

Slic3r has support for these fan commands and it works very nicely, default is on after the 3rd layer has completed i believe.

Matt

Doesn't a wide-area air blast cause warping on ABS? I've found that draughts destroy a print easily, and ISTM that a general airflow over the whole bed would be akin to a continuous draught, thus I had only considered using a narrow directed airflow onto the nozzle.

I've only ever printed with PLA (avoided ABS because of the smell!) and not ever had a problem with warping, some slight lifting at the corners of large (150mm+) prints was corrected with the better adhesion (i.e. not using kapton) provided by glass and a good pva/water mix.

I have contemplated making a directable nozzle, but have to correct a few fan - bed clearance issues first.

Unfortunately my ormerod is out of action and awaiting parts so further testing will have to wait.

Matt,
I've printed your bed fan holder and have a 3 pin fan. Which are the connections on the duet board that I should use? Do I need to just connect red and black or is the yellow sensing wire used as well.

I have a feeling that this has been documented somewhere but I can't find it.
Can you help please.
Paul

Thanks

There is a connection marked Fan0 and it's the last 2 pins bottom right of the Duet.

I am just printing these and have made a 40mm fan bracket if anyone wants it.

Les

I've not found ABS printing makes much of a smell. I can discern a mild "hot plastic" smell close to the Ormerod, but it is not noticeable to me at all further than a meter or so from the printer (despite the fact that I no longer smoke!).

Warping is a far bigger issue with ABS than PLA, so I suspect your design would not be suitable for ABS prints, but I may give it a go to find out for sure.

Attached modified fan mount with nozzle for 40mm fan. This mount attaches to the original arm.

I am using Matt's mount at the moment and have had great success with it. Interested in your nozzle but not sure about the mounting, which original arm are you referring to because it doesn't fit Matt's. Do you have an stl for your arm.

New arm for the 40mm nozzle mount. The nozzle should have fitted the original arm but it clips over the attachment instead of fitting in the middle of it.

If you want different length of arm, please let me know.

Finally got around to printing your nozzle and arm. Its working very well and the bridging is excellent. Just got to print a rear finger grill and it will be perfect. Thanks for providing the stls
