Not sticking...

Not sticking...

Still can't get a print off, not worked since I changed filament.

I was using plain glass before, just wiped with nail varnish remover and away it went.

I've tried IPA, vinegar, today I built up a layer of dilute PVA by dabbing it on when warm.

Still nothing, start a print and the filament just rolls up around the nozzle and makes a big mess.

I have tried setting the first later lower, setting z zero lower, nothing.

Nozzle is at 195, bed at 65 for first layer.

Will have to resort to Kapton if this keeps up.

When printing PLA on glass, I've mostly used glue stick which has worked well enough. Otherwise, if I have something where the bottom layer is in any way complex or sensitive, I use blue painters tape. Works perfect, way better than any other method I have tried, and has a lot more tolerance for Z homing being a bit off, or bed being a bit uneven. Only downside is it takes a minute or two to cover a large area with tape (that often has to be replaced), and the slight cost of the tape itself.

Have you tried solvent cement yet? I use it for problem filaments that won't stick to glass primed with vinegar.

I never had any success printing on glass cleaned with acetone or isopropanol. For filaments that do work on glass, I found it best to wash the glass in hot soapy water, dry it with paper towel and then prime it with vinegar just before the print when the bed is hot. Any attempt to clean the bed with acetone failed and I had to start with hot soapy water again.

I started off using a thin PVA mix painted on thinly with a brush but I have now "moved on" to using a quick spray of L'Oreal Elnett Satin !!!
Every five or so prints I respray. Just one thin pass.
This has worked for me everytime.
Apparently its actually any hair spray with vinyl neodecanoate coplymer.

I'm going to try some of these ideas today, I have a can of Elnet hairspray, don't ask me why smiling smiley so I can try that too.

Check that the nozzle is parallell to the glas/Joar

Just done that, also fitted a quieter fan and gave her a min service, reset the z probe too as that moved when i fitted the fan.

trying now on plain glass wiped with vinegar

She's up and running again smiling smiley

The scrub in soapy water plus vinegar wipe seems to be holding up, running a small 50x50 print now.

Do you scrub every print or just occasionally?

The new fan is excellent, makes a change being able to talk over the noise of the printer winking smiley

Just occasionally. I avoid fingermarking the plate, and I always wipe with vinegar between prints.

Ok thanks, seems to be working ok again now.

I tried this little robot off thingyverse...

It worked very well apart from the hands, there was no support and they ended up as stringy lumps.

I had support turned on and the angle at 20deg as mentioned in the thingyverse text.

Is there a method to get good support from slic3r ??

I printed the very same but sliced in Simplify3D that gives you total control over support material, you can do auto or manual...or auto and then remove or ad some, came out just fine, never had much luck with slic3rs support feature

Not cheap though, will have a think about it.

Looks good though, multi platform too.

Yes I like it a lot, it's not without faults but neither is Slic3r and Cura,
I esp. like the "what you see is what you get" print preview

Manifold auto-repairing seems to need a bit more work, slic3r do it better

..and if Kapton should fail you - try criss cross sanding the tape with wet and dry P320, works every time for me when I have a bad Kapton day

Thanks,

I'm back on the plain glass at present, a good scrub then wipe with vinegar while warm seems to be good, today at least smiling smiley

Hi @ormerod168 - I've just started to explore Simplify3D and really like the look of it, but just cannot get started with a set of parameters that will actually upload from the webinterface - I get an error message each time it gets to 100% - would you mind sharing your Simplify3D settings file please?

MrCrispi, what error message are you getting, and which version of the web interface are you using?

Thanks for the interest @DC42 - I am conscious that I am taking Dave's original topic rather off-piste here, so I've now created it as a new topic here with some screenshots...
