Verbatim PLA Filament

Verbatim PLA Filament

I just wanted to hear if anyone else have problem with Verbatim PLA filament with Ormerod 2?

I have run out of my white test filament i got with my printer, now i have 1kg black Verbatim PLA from RS. It makes very good prints, no issues at all, one thing i have noticed though, compared to the Ormerod supplied filament is, that it warps up from the bed a lot more.

The big problem i have is that the filament is broken just before the extruder motor gear/wheel/grabber, somewhere in the bent part, its not always but if its broken its at the first print in the morning.

I made i stand for it and its just in line with the printer.

I have the stand with the filament far away to not get it to bend to much but it dosent help much.

Any idea what to do to come around this?

I have one roll of filament that always breaks right by the extruder if left overnight (or even for a few hours) - it seems to get really fragile where subjected to sharp bends or twists and left for a while. Other filaments seem less fragile.

I have got into the habit of just reversing the filament out of the extruder at the end of each session.

The filaments I use always break in the extruder drive if left overnight. I tried slackening the screw on the spring loaded extruder drives I am using, but it didn't help.

No idea, I cannot see your setup could be better in any way and is just like mine, must be down to the quality of the filament as I never ever have had any breakage, neither the material I got with the ormerod1 a year ago, nor the filament from 3dfilaprint and 3d eksperten (Denmark) and I always let the filament sit between prints

I also remove filament after every session so have not seen breakage yet. Too humid here at the moment and want to keep it as dry as possible.

Do you have a link to the parts for your filament stand - I like the design?

Original white filament and previous filament bought up until now didnt break and could be left for long periods, but the latest 3x 1kg reels I have purchased from a different supplier all break at the point you mention if left over night in the extruder. So I have also moved to backing the filament out over night.

I have noticed that the new stuff is a lot more brittle than the original white test filament and previous reels I bought.

I use ABS, but find the printing characteristics vary quite a bit depending on the colour, and I suspect that it is due to the colouring material affecting the properties. Darker colours generally seem to need a lower hotend temperature than lighter colours, so maybe some of the heat transfer from hotend to filament is via radiated heat rather than conducted. Some ABS filaments also get brittle and break in the extruder if left for a long time, but it is in any case good practice to remove the filament after use and store the reel in a sealed plastic bag with silica gel. Turn off the motors and insert or remove filament by turning the extruder gear by hand - it's a lot faster than using the motor - plus when inserting filament you can feel the filament bottom out in the cold nozzle and stop turning.

I've had some terrible filament, mainly cheap stuff bought from ebay. Last few times I've bought from [www.printme3d.com] . Quality seems much better and the price is pretty reasonable IMO. Only problem I've found is that it tends to be stuck to itself a bit on the spool so you have to keep an eye on it so it doesn't snag or un-spool a decent length first

Fun that you like them.
I can put them on Thingiverse tonight and link them, and do a parts list after work tonight.

My first Thingiverse upload.

Filament holder

I bought M10 rod, washers, ball bearings and nuts on Biltema here in Sweden but its very common sizes.

The feeder have a 2mm hole for 1,75mm filament.

Thank you for sharing your design!
Will have to take a trip to biltema tomorrow.

This is my current spool holder and I will not share it winking smiley

Thats a great stand to, if you get tired on printing you got some good reading underneath smiling smiley

Biltema numbers
4 x Ball bearing 41414
1 x Box Washer 19875
1 x Box Nut 87899
1 x M10 rod 19388

I didn't want a 1kg spool coming down the shelf it stands on so i put some double sided tape at each corner. (Biltema 29505)

I see Visual54 uses the same workbench layout as I do winking smiley

That's a terrible layout! There are not nearly enough empty beer bottles for a start, and I can see a few small areas of unused work surface that could easily have been filled with some bits of discarded wire or loose nuts & bolts. There is no area of my bench that is under less than 3 layers of junk essential equipment. I'd show you if I could only find where I put my camera ...

HAHA - I am still hoping to find the memory card that shot out of my printer somewhere under my "essential equipment"

To my defense I had the desk cleaned before I started the build of the O2. I can promise that the number of beer bottles will increase in numbers and the unused spaces will fill up soon enough smiling smiley

@RoSt
How long did you cut the threaded rods?
Re: Verbatim PLA Filament

After a rebuild of my O2, changed one of the acrylic endplates tjat broke during assembling and upgraded to the alu x-arm, I was finally ready to print your filament holder.

Looking at your filament holder designs, I must ask, is the extruder motor that strong to pull (at the start) a whole of 1kg reel?

I thought the entire goal and purpose of these machines was to design and create filament spools and holders?!?!?

My extruder once lifted an almost full 1kg reel off the floor when the filament got tangled, so yes.

Thanks Dave.

And on the topic, Ive been using filament from BQ (Spain) and for now I am more than satisfied with it.

I have used [www.shop.3dfilaprint.com] for a year and am thus far quite happy with both the service and quality. Each reel is supplied with a resealable plastic bag and silica gel packet, and they stock many specialist filaments as well as PLA and ABS.
