Prusa Mendel 2.0 Question

Prusa Mendel 2.0 Question
February 06, 2012 11:46AM
What should the length of the smooth bars between the x-end-motor and x-end-idler be for Prusa iteration 2?

I bought a kit for iteration 1 and the bars are too long.

How long are your X smooth rods? I was able to continue the build by adding an extra set of nuts on the top threaded rods spacing the Z motor mounts farther out from the vertexes to match the extra X distance. The threaded rod at the bottom was just barely long enough to clamp the Z smooth rods in the appropriate place.

400mm instead of the normal 420mm

Mazaw — thanks for the input. I was thinking that might be a solution, but ended up buying a hacksaw instead of the nuts.

NelsonRap — thanks. I'm sure your answer will be helpful to others, since there's no documentation about this right now (as far as I know).

OK. I cut the bars to 400mm and was able to align them correctly.

Right away I have bumped into another roadblock and have a question.

The couplings of the Prusa 2.0 build that I have, which go on the NEMA 17 strepper motors and connect to the threaded rods that drive the vertical axis, don't fit on the axels of the strepper motors. I have tightened the end of the coupling that is supposed to go on the strepper motors to it's maximum, but ithe hole is a bit too big, by a mm or two.

Anyone have any ideas what I can do to fix this? Am I missing something? Do I need to go to my local hacker space and print out the 1.0 couplings or is there another option?

The Z coupling are nophead's with the 4 bolts right?

You need some plastic tubing around the motor shaft (it helps cancel the Z wobble).

Perfect. It looks like I was missing that piece of documentation.

Now, I just hope I can find a good source for that tubing in Toronto.

Thanks so much for the help. smiling smiley

Somewhere like Home depot or the Canadian equivalent. I'm in NZ but have been to Toronto a log time ago so don't know what your hardware stores are anymore

Aquarium air line tubing. Available from any pet or aquarium store.

Thanks. I will check out those locations.

I will probably also have more questions. Using a kit for the first iteration with second iteration parts has been a challenge.

OK. I have another question.

What size M3 screw do I need to attach the NEMA motor to the x-end-motor part?

It seems the small screws I have are too small and the next size up are too big.

On mine it is m3 10mm but for the extruder motor I have to use m3 12mm

Thanks. I will have to go buy some more metric screws I think.

I think for some reason I need a 12mm M3 bolt to fasten the NEMA motor to the x-end-motor part for the Prusa 2.0. The 10 mm ones are not working. Since, the documentation for the 2.0 is lacking I don't know for sure what I need.

Where can I find a 12mm M3 bolt? I can't even seem to find any locally. I checked two hardware stores already and looked online, but all they sell are kits, which don't have 12mm.

Argh, this is so frustrating.

I had issues finding those sizes in California. Homedepot, Lowes, and ACE did not carry them. BUT Orchad Supply Hardware had M3 sizes varying from 8mm to 20mm.

Unfortunately, I don't have access to Orchad.

I found an online store for M3s bolts.

Are these the right kind?

Those look good.

A correction to my last post.
That should have been "Orchard Supply Hardware."

Thanks for posting. I think Orchard is US only.

Here's a vendor that someone told me of which has outlets in Canada too:

If you need bolts quick and cant get out, another source is ebay! there often alot cheaper too grinning smiley

That's the type of bolt I use here in NZ I use them for the whole build, if you get really stuck I could probably ship some from here

Hey Jakowisp, Roboteernat and NelsonRap,

Thanks for the tips and verification. I think I will just order these from fastenal.com or ebay.

I think once I have these and some extras just for in case I should be OK to get through the rest of this build.... I hope.

So I skipped ahead a step to try to assemble Greg's accessible extruder and got stuck again.

The nut traps seem to be too small for the M3 nuts. How do I get them in there?
Re: Prusa Mendel 2.0 Question
March 21, 2012 01:27PM
I used a small paint brush and acetone to enlarge holes on my build.
I had an issue with the hobbed bolt hex head not fitting the gear. Also the 608 bering holes were too small.
A bit of acetone applied to the edges with the bush softened the ABS and allowed me to insert the bolt head/bearings.

Same should work for the nut trap.

Thanks I will try that. smiling smiley

I think Josef makes his nut traps deliberately tight and recommends pushing the nuts in with a hot soldering iron.

Thanks for the suggestions. I used Acetone and it worked. I might have used a soldering iron, but don't have one.

The extruder is all done. smiling smiley

After a long break, I am determined to finish this printer. I just have to get the hot end and the heated bed finished, then do the electronics.

For the hot end, I have a question:

How do I get the hot end supplied in the mixshop kit attached to the prusa 2.0 geared extruder part? (image attached)

Here's the link for the hot end instructions:

Thanks smiling smiley

I guess the image was hard to see or maybe hard to answer.

Maybe I should go with an arcolt hot end instead? I am at a loss for how these attach to the actual extruder though.
Re: Prusa Mendel 2.0 Question

If it the same as a normal Wade's extruder it should have a 16mm hole in the bottom with two screw holes cutting through it. You insert the PTFE and drill though the holes and insert long self tappers or tap it M3 and put M3x30 bolts through.
