hollow lock set screws for jhead

I need a UK or European source for hollow lock set screws for a jhead.
I wish to start making my own having recently invested in a model making lathe.
I placed an order with McMaster-Carr in the US, but they would not accept it.
Quote "Due to the complexity of US export regulations, McMaster-Carr only accepts international purchases from our established international customers." un quote.
I cannot find anyone in the UK.

Thanks. I checked out the website and while there are lots of set screws, I cannot find any hollow lock setscrews.

Anyone? It is holding me up at the moment. Does nobody make jheads in Europe?

Only suppliers I can find are in the US and won't ship to the UK or else China where there is a minimum order of 10,000.

Hey Dave,

What you are looking for are 'Socket Set Screws'

I just did a quick google and found these: [cpc.farnell.com]

I cannot remember what size the JHeads take but I would guess either 2mm or 3mm.

Have a look on eBay I am sure you will find some if you search for Socket Set Screws.

Hope this helps,

Alex

Alex, Gordon:

I am trying to make a Mk V - BV jhead as per the Reprap Wiki [reprap.org]
The thread of the set screw is 5/16-24 which I think is UNF.

I have the Peek rod, I have the brass square section profile, I have the PTFE liner, I have the lathe. I am ready to go if I can find the set screws.

The terminology might be a problem. They are known as "hollow-lock socket set screws" and also "jam set screws". I have searched for both. If I can't find them, I might drill out and shorten a suitable grub screw. I prefer not to.

i'm currently making M6 hollow grub screws for myself, by drilling them out with with a 2.5mm or 1/18th drill bit, it's not easy because they are hardened

Dave,

I now know what you are after.

And yes, they are EXTREMELY hard to come by!

I haven't seen them stocked anywhere apart from US and Int sellers.

These are the ones I am after: [www.mcmaster.com]

They are used to hold the ptfe liner in place in the peek bit. They are hollow in the center.
Thanks zavashier, but the link you posted does not list this type.
In the mean time I have just ordered 5/16 x 1/2" grub screws that I will have to drill out and shorten.
I have also had to buy a set of UNF taps and dies which cost almost as much as a jhead.
The Wiki mentions alternatively making them from 3/8" peek rod and cutting a slot in the end. I prefer a steel set screw.

Thanks Ohmarinus. A european source at last.
They are relatively expensive though. 1.49 euros for one, compared with $11.56 for 25 with McMaster-Carr.
I will order a few.

Yeah not the cheapest for everything and there is VAT at %21 to add as well as postage so bare that in mind but they are quick.
