Printer set up

Hi, ever since I built the printer, I have it set up like this (pic.)
It has been working great. The other day, a friend come over, he told me that it is not good to have the extruder motor to drag the filament, Is it true?

Still newish myself, but you should be fine. The extruder motor is supposed to pull the filament off of the spool in order to push it through the hotend. As long as the spool unwinds easily and you haven't had any issues, I don't see the problem.

Dead wrong. There is no better way to bring the filament to the extruder. It is almost a straight line path wherever the extruder is on the X axis and the only friction being where the spool turns on the pipe. You are doing fine. Don't change it.

Thank you all for affirming my thought. The way I set it up, the spooler canr spin freely with very little resistance and the spooler can move left and right some what as the X axis pulls it.
