cura vs slic3r with almost the same settings
May 05, 2015 08:23PM
Hi, here I am again
After almost 1kg of spent filament, trying to achieve better and better prints, today I gave slic3r a try and got better results on parts dimensions.
I'm using an Hephestos, 0.4mm nozzle diam. 1.75mm filament

Printing with 0.2 layer height for test purposes:

Slic3r 19x19x7 hollow cube (similar to this: [www.dropbox.com] ) with 2mm wall
I got 19.08x19.11x7.13 and 2.10mm wall

However using Cura, with the same cube
I get 19.22x19.39x7.14 and 2.43mm wall

I cannot get Cura to print as good as slic3r (X and Y dimensions), why ?
Why I cannot get cura to print a 2mm wall correctly ?
Two problems :
1) incorrect wall thickness on printed parts
2) Incorrect X and Y printed part dimension

My cura settings:
0.2 layer height = first layer height
100% first layer width
1.2mm shell thickness
0.6mm top/bottom thickness

slic3r:
0.2 layer height
0.3 first layer height
Vertical Shells:
3 perimeters (minimum)
Horizontal Shells
5 Top solid layers ; 3 Bottom Solid layers

What is making slic3r print the parts with correct dimensions and cura not?

thanks again

the problem is the extrusion width... Slicr does it automatically so the parts are accurate.. For cura you need to play around with to get it right..

i found that cura width setting should match the nozzle ie 0.4 nozzle 0.4 width, so i e 1.2 mm perimeter would give me 3 where as slicer i can say i want 3 perimeters

I too have 1.2 on shell thickness, only thing different i have is the width, i cannot seem to find where to set it to 0.4 (I can only find first line width)

i can't either i just assumed that trying to print either wider than nozzle or thinner just complicates things, because i print in slicer with 0.4 nozzle 0.4 layer height but cura doesn't like 0.4 it comes up a side note when trying 0.3 lower i prefer cura though faster slicer better quality prints

So , you're using cura...what errors on dimensions are you getting?
are you able to print a 2mm wall and it prints 2mm not >2.10 ?
Can you share your settings?

i can share settings tomorrow away from the printer at the moment

@chris33
you should not be printing with a layer height more than 80% of the nozzle diameter.. max layer height with .4 nozzle is 0.25.....

80% of .4mm is .32mm...
I have a .4mm tip and print .3 all the time without issues.

well i don't like the 0.05 bit i'd rather round it to a zero so .3 .2 .1 im not interested in doing finer prints because my stuff i want from my printer more mechanical than a nice vase or something eye appealing so until i upgrade my printer to ultimaker

I mainly do .2mm prints with my .4mm tip. I use .3mm for faster prints on simple geometry.

oh and another reason i don't do .005 cause error
