@the_digital_dentist (Mark?), that's an awesome printer you've made. You certainly know what you're talking about. I think I'm a bit limited because there aren't really junkyards where I am. I guess the alternative that's relatively open now is Aliexpress and other cheap Chinese sources. The savings in electronics alone are phenomenal, but a lot of other bits and pieces should be relatively cheby pugzor - General
QuoteZavashier Why timing chains ? do you need to go on a single way with heavy load ? A 3d printer is the opposite. Timing chains are for conveyors or bikes, or any unprecise application. You can get no precision with them ! Many reasons to don't use that : - no smooth motion - large pitch - weight = low acceleration - noisy - needs to be greased often - needs to be tensionned and controled ofteby pugzor - General
Quotemrorange26 New head is doing nice prints but still getting slight jumps does anybody have any suggestions on what it could be. On that print I was doing 0.1mmlayer,0.8mm shell thickness,0.6 bottom/top thickness,0 infill,195c temp,100% flow retraction 35mm,4.5mm distance, initial layer 0.3,travel speed 80,bottom layer speed 20mm/s,bottom layer 20mm/s,all others 40mm/s Wow man, that's lookinby pugzor - Delta Machines
Well I'd imagine that certain components are fine to be over-engineered (eg, stationary parts of the structure where the extra weight isn't going to be an issue), but others will need to be pretty spot-on (such as most moving parts). I was considering this last night on my commute home. Here are some issues I think might be relevant with the scale up: Timing belts - We're used to playing withby pugzor - General
Originally it blocked at the bottom of the PTFE and there was a small gap between the PTFE and the thread of the nozzle. Well, by gap I mean there was a space between where the PLA had solidified in the two pieces. That was my first indication it had melted too high and cooled. The second time it jammed I'm not sure, but the nozzle and the plumbing fitting had both been done up tight to the PEEKby pugzor - Delta Machines
Quotethe_digital_dentist What's proprietary about it? Look at the photos and build one. With that mentality I should be building space shuttles in my shed. Just because I can see one and know roughly how it works doesn't mean it's able to be built at home. I'm not a great inventor either... mostly I copy. I was hoping to find something a little more open that may follow the reprap philosophy.by pugzor - General
Quotethe_digital_dentist I did find that, but I was hoping to find something a little less proprietary, and a little more DIY. I've read a few posts on forums and blogs with people aiming to complete one for around $3k...by pugzor - General
QuoteAndyCart My own Cherry Pi has been printing for weeks without me touching the calibration settings. It just works. This is what I'm aiming for! QuoteAndyCartYou shouldn't need a cooling fan for your JHead. The centrifugal fan is purely for part cooling. It sounds like you have got some debris in the nozzle. Given that the print looked under extruded and them jammed I suspect that is the prby pugzor - Delta Machines
Hey all, I've almost finished a delta with a respectable print area (based on AndyCart's Cherry Pi III), but I'm already looking forward to my next project. I was hoping to build something big enough that could potentially print an engine block. They aren't as big as you'd think. One of the largest in terms of length I'd require would be 70cm long for a large bore straight six. To accommodate aby pugzor - General
Quotedc42 The hot end fan must be wired directly to 12V so that it runs all the time. It's purpose is to keep the top end of the nozzle assembly cool, to avoid the filament melting too high up. Really? I've only got a centrifugal fan on mine which blows air only onto the nozzle tip. This one should be on all the time? I thought this was more for solidifying extruded plastic quickly.by pugzor - Delta Machines
Just running the standard jhead clone Andy supplies. Using Colorfabb PLA @ 210°C. It's jamming when the fan isn't running. Ambient temp is above 20°C.by pugzor - Delta Machines
*sigh* My hotend keeps getting clogged. Got this far on my test print and then the filament seized within the hotend again, above the nozzle. Really freaking annoying because I need to take apart the effector and recalibrate again. The print above is how much I got out of it before it clogged. Any ideas why? As you can see, the print quality seems pretty good. Maybe a bit under-extruding ifby pugzor - Delta Machines
Actually, come to think of it, a "finished print" retraction piece of code might be kind of handy. I've had an idea to make quick release filament holders for multi-filament machines, which I'd like to explore down the track. Might even make the things a little bit easier to transport. I'm totally keen to use a Chimera E3D hotend, but it might justify making a completely new printer since it needby pugzor - Delta Machines
Can anyone see something stupid here? I have terrible luck with not checking the one important box I'm meant to... Yeah, I'm trying to go through this process with some documentation so there's less bother to other people looking for the same info haha. I had a funny movement on my delta last night while autocalibrating. Funnily enough it did end up succeeding. I'm pretty confident that it was just the switch on the effector being triggered by movement of the fan. Check this if you're having similar issues! I'm going to shave some off my fan's flange before actually trying to print.by pugzor - Delta Machines
(Professor Farnsworth voice) Good news everyone! It really looks like it wasn't an issue with my bowden. Further more it wasn't my nozzle being clogged either. It was in the hot end though! The sleeve between the plumbing fitting and the nozzle was clogged with filament (some had melted and completely filled it). The filament had even kinked just on the other side of the plumbing fitting. Anyby pugzor - Delta Machines
Hmm. Attempted my first print, and I came across the same issue I had last time... Filament isn't being pushed through the bowden. I released the hinge that keeps the filament between the bearing and the bolt and tried pushing through the filament manually during a print, and couldn't. Are these symptoms of a clogged nozzle? Haha, not yet mrorange26, but will do today. Maybe. Mylation, I think vreihen is right. About the mental illness thing and also parts costs. There are some tricks to getting cheaper parts but probably the biggest determining factor is time. Quotegowen Looking awesome! I think I might try this setup if I get bored down the track (or have some kind of failure). Can't provide any advice on the wiring for the effector but I think most of the frame wiring is pretty simple. Probably the hardest is getting the wires for the steppers to go through the centre of the extrusion, if that's what you're going to do. The extrusion I got was aby pugzor - Delta Machines

Hi all, I'm not sure how everyone else is going, but the guy from 3D Hubs that's been printing my replacement parts asked on reddit what the deal was with the effector file failing for him. I've attached a couple of images which show how it was appearing in various software packages. Someone on reddit was nice enough to rebuild the file too.
