The other thing that comes to mind is could the heat be building up in the j-head, causing the ptfe to swell? That temp has me wondering, I dunno i think we need a bit more info. Have you tried lower temps? I have only 1 pla that has wanted 200c+ temps to print consistantly and now with some tweaking i am thinking I am running to hot with it even.by djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
Is it skipping or chewing filament?by djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
Wow, Missed your comments Serge, sorry we posted at roughly the same time. Glad to see the 8mm rod fix on the head. Do you have any thoughts on my design for dual hot-ends? I am super excited about this build, Just got my 18x8 proximity sensor in today, did a lil testing. It picks up the heated bed through glass @ 5v. Sweetby djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
Good call on the github update, had not checked there yet. I think the motor/rod will be just fine, if we were running direct drive up there, maybe not but virtually no weight to deal with.by djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
So been playing around with this, this morning. Still have to figure out a way to beef up the "head" mounting holes to support extra weight. Went with 30mm fans to save space, might need to move them down a few mm instead of right on clamp to get cooling on heads proper. Check your actuall board too for thickness, mine was 12.5 Lumber getting more and more undersized every year lolby djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
Using Cura I set shell thickness at 1.2mm Top/Bottom shells at 1.2mm infill at 45% with .3mm layers, 300MM in all directions would make Z on the box 340 with a 200mm build height Just updated OP with stls A few things you should know if you havent been following the youmagine comments. The rod support on the motors is a bit thin, the motor will compensate for this but the print doesnt makeby djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
Best guess on the oversize for parts is 55mm over build for the X Rods, 65mm over build for the Y rod, Zrod is 100 over build volume. Side boards are 65mm + board thickness +rod length L Back is 110mm + Xrod L Height is Z-Rod +40mm bottom is back+boardthickiness*2 x side board L M8's should be 40mm 608zz x 9 not counting extruder idler So given those #'s My box should be 584mm x 522mm x 420mby djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
Was actually thinking about putting the stl's up on youmagine as well but I will definately post them here. There are a few problems with the design for 8mm rods but I think its workable, I might redesign the "head" when I do my work for dual extruders but for now It will be single to get it up and running. As for the box so far I haven't really calculated that out, I am somewhat thinking I wanby djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
Hello all, thought I would document my in progress SmartRap Core build. I was going to wait till I had all parts printed to start this but it seems my hotend's heater cartridge may be going out. So while I troubleshoot/wait for parts I'll get started here. Here is what I have printed so far, never mind the rods in the image those are just for test fiting STLs for the parts I am using:by djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
For sure, in fact i will start a build thread one i finish printing parts.by djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
Printing parts now 1/2" MDF, 8mm rods, heated bed, oversized to allow for dual extruders and extra build height. Was half way through a Prusa i3 rebuild of my current cobbled mess and found this beauty.by djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
Well got it up and running again, here's a video That rack is nice compared to the fishing line. While I didn't get my wiring as clean as I would like, it is much much better. I still have to mount my small LCD but debating if I will even do that, it will just give me that much more motivation to get a smart panel ordered. I will say I really need to get my behind in gear in learning Freby djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
Mostly I have been tinkering in order to learn about all of this, but I have managed to pull together a few key chains, a wall bracket to hold my wireless headphones, a few cookie cutters, but my "best" yet was an adapter to fit a camera to the finderscope on my father's telescope. Once I get a better grasp of modeling I am sure there will be many more things down the line.by djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
Awesome tips, thats kinda what I was thinking, going to be working on all this tomorrow as I am heading out for the evening, but I am very excited to give this rack and pinion a go round. I plan on taking my time this time and laying things out as clean as I can. I plan on unhooking everything and essentially starting a fresh build so to speak.by djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
I will definitely check out the Hobbyking link, as for the modifications, I just eyeballed the positioning and drilled out the risers on the flat side of the belt holders. I would like to work on the actual models and make them "proper" for rack and pinion but things seem to be moving smoothly at the moment. That I think will be my first attempt at modifying a model in freecad, I am getting a gby djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
Where are my manners? Thank you Regpye for the link on the gear generators, I did end up going another route as my belt was just not going to work. So I made a few modifications to parts I had in hand and am evolving to a rack and pinion drive, at least for now. Have to really re-arrange everything to accommodate the wider Y plate, so hopefully I will have it back up and running in the nexby djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
I have been inspired by this thread, still have some tweaking to do but I had it up to 80mm/s yesterday, ended up skipping a few steps, but its been reliable at 60mm/s so far. Just makes me want to get my belt drive finished that much faster, I am almost 100% positive it wasn't exactly missed steps but slipping fishing line and/or backlash.by djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
I can't even begin to describe how happy this makes me... I'll pick up hardware tomorrow I think. I have a belt that I scavenged from an old scanner, but I don't have a drive gear, does anyone know where to find a printable one? I have searched and printed a few but nothing is matching up right.by djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
SMH, And I was thrilled I got up to 30mm/s with a geared extruder and my .4mm nozzle. To scared to try any faster till I get off this fishing line. Maybe after I get the wide Y plate done I'll try something small at 40 100mm/s has got to be just blazing through, very impressive.by djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
Now I am really confused because It seems to have made an improvement in my prints after playing with it and I am on the grid, but that's all a discussion for another thread. Good to have the knowledge in any case.by djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
Your welcome, although it was just a short in the dark I was poking around in the firmware and saw that and wondered what it was, now I know. I did change mine to .4 as well for a test seems good but still off. Do you know how it behaves?by djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
Quotemarkstephen Thanks! That did it!!!! A 0.4 on the DELTA_X has it darn near perfect. Don't know how I missed that before. Glad you liked the video. Mark I will have to try playing with mine and see if that is the cause,by djinn5150 - Smart_Rap

Turns out I was maxing out my travel, causing lost steps. At least that is my theory, did 0 changes last night and re ran the part at 50% scale and it came out perfect. Just finishing up expanding my Y axis now will report back soon. Man I can't wait to get converted to GT2 drive.by djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
Ok so I am working on printing out Regpye's Wide Y setup, my printbed can barely fit 1 end on it at a time, I printed the + end first with 0 problems attempted the - Side and ended up with some lifting/warping( Which I am not worried about) and some of the leans. All my lines are tight the leans seem to be in the +y/+x direction I am not maxing out when its running. Any ideas what might be cby djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
I would recomend checking endstop status with m119, make sure the logic is correct, ie; they are showing as triggered when they are triggered and open when they are open. I was having problems very similar and turned out to be endstop wiring issues, loose connections or faulty end stops. Once they got squared away it started behaving as expected. Good luckby djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
Thats a very good question, that I most definately do not have an answer to. The direct drive is definately working much better with the new extruder, not going to say I am getting "flawless" prints but if I don't have a lot of retractions it seems to be going good. Going to slow down my retraction speed and try this dinosaur again. It went great until it was just the head and spikes, lots ofby djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
Quoteduranza nice cura print I'm really liking cura alot. Is there a way to scale an stl inside cura? If you click on the model in cura you should get three boxes appear at the bottom of the model view, they are rotate, scale and mirror. You can scale in all axis locked or individually Looking good, I was having all sorts of problems until I ditched slic3r in favor of cura, its now my onlyby djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
Can't ask for much better then this...well I could but it would be pushing it for now Now I can use my new filament, once my hobbed bolt shows up i'll move to Regpye's extruder, its printed and waiting. For what its worth, the washer isn't actually pressing on the bearingby djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
Came across a couple 10ohm 25 watt resistors in my shop today, decided to put them to work. NO MORE CD ROM, between the 2 only pulling .25amp so hopefully not to much wasted juice. Going to change my firmware for the PSU defualt off and include a m80 in the startup and an m81 in the end code. To save on wasted electricity. Running a short test print now to see how it handles the load overallby djinn5150 - Smart_Rap
