If the heat sensor slips out of the block (as happened with me when I cleared a dribble of plastic from the nozzle), there is nothing to tell the firmware that it is overheating. You do eventually smell it though! No, I would also never leave the Ormerod unattended, which is why I have been running it in the living room so I can watch TV while it prints. Once the filament got tangled. I was uby dmould - Ormerod
If the aluminium block gets too hot, not only will it result in the filament melting too early as droftarts says, but the heat will be conducted through the mounting screws and melt the printed part, resulting in the hotend droop that some people have reported. I suspect that those who have suffered from that issue are seeing the consequence of a cooling problem - maybe not good enough thermal cby dmould - Ormerod
The printed part at the top of the vertical extrusion that holds the Z runner could easily be extended to cover and hold the top of the threaded rod. I might make the modification myself.by dmould - Ormerod
Hmmm. As an unscientific test, I've just touched the head of one of the screws in question with my little fingertip during a print. It is just slightly warm to the touch, I estimate maybe 40 deg at the very most, even though I'm 2 hours into an ABS print job (230 deg setting). Certainly the screws are not hot enough to soften the printed part. Maybe the root problem is a failure of the fan atby dmould - Ormerod
There's nothing wrong with electronically compensating for minor mechanical misalignments in my opinion - in fact it is easier and more accurate than mechanical adjustments. The end result is exactly the same. The important thing however is to ensure that the mechanics are stable. If the alignment changes from print to print you cannot compensate. The worst offender in the case of the Ormerodby dmould - Ormerod
To get printing quickly, I originally temporarily taped a strip of cardboard along the X axis for the 9mm bearing to run on. However this has compressed over the past few days of printing, and the sag is again a problem. Probably the best permanent solution will be to replace the 9mm bearing with a 10mm part, but I have a few prints I want to do over this weekend and cannot get hold of a bearinby dmould - Ormerod
To print from SD card via Pronterface, use commands M20, M23 and M24. To pause the print, the command is M25. So, first enter M20 (must be uppercase). This will return a list of the files on the SD card. As the filenames are always in 8.3 format, these may be different to the filenames you copied to the card Then enter M23 BUT NOTE that the filename must always be in *lower* case letters evby dmould - Ormerod
Hmmm. Treth, I suspect it is a browser or browser add-on compatibility issue. Next time I want to post a pic, I'll try a different browser. Kwikius, that was my first print using ABS rather than PLA. The bit of discolouration is due to the remains of black PLA in the nozzle. I used the recommended heat setting for ABS (240 C), but I think that it would have been better with a lower hotend teby dmould - Ormerod
I quite agree that the Ormerod was sold as a fully functional 3D printer kit rather than a "work in progress" that purchasers were expected to fault-find and make design changes in order to get working. As a development engineer, I purchased it for my company as a tool to make prototypes and "proof of concept" parts. RS should really make it clear that this is essentially an experimental hobbyiby dmould - Ormerod
@Radian, I am sceptical that the spikes you are seeing when unrelated main switching occurs are really there. I suspect that the ringing is on the earth side of your 'scope probe, You might try powering the Duet from just its USB port (or even a 12V battery) and see if you observe similar ringing when your soldering iron is switched.by dmould - Ormerod
@Treth - Yes. I clicked the "create link in message button" but it didn't appear to do anything.by dmould - Ormerod
Here's one I made - it's a push-fit over the fan. Requires 5mm clearance between fan and Duet enclosure. Pics and design files attached (DesignSpark free CAD prog & STL) - can't figure out how to embed the photos in this message like you other clever buggers have done (it's late ).by dmould - Ormerod
