By Definition, a Miter Saw Stand is an Awesome RepRap

A silly thought, I know...but:

The concept of a RepRap (as defined on the RepRap.org front page), If taken loosely, declares that this miter saw stand is a RepRap.

The Miter Saw Stand - It is a machine which is fed a raw material, which is capable of making goods and its own parts (some not all, just like a RepRap)

In fact, I think that a miter saw stand can more easily make another miter saw stand than a reprap can make another reprap

Human intervention is needed to make the replication happen; nothing new there...

Now, I certainly don't believe these ramblings; but I do encourage everyone to think outside the box while attempting to develop a self replicating machine

Fused filament tech may not always reign supreme; it may be beaten shortly, it may remain strong...

For you, is the RepRap Project more about 3D printing, or self-replication?

Technically it works without any parts that it makes itself so it is not even in the loosest terms a reprap. If it made even one part that it needed to operate then maybe.

My extruders can still function when not attached to a carriage

The saw can spin when not bolted down to the stand

You just proved my point. The extruder has parts it can make itself with a skilled enough person holding it even if it is not attached to the machine. But no part of the miter saw could make any other part of the miter saw, even if fully assembled.

My RepRapPro Huxley extruder is made entirely of machined metal and is attached to an off the shelf heatsink fan.

It was not made by a RepRap at all

That's just the hotend. The extruder is mounted to the upper frame and is printed on another printer. No parts of the miter saw were made on a miter saw.

Miter Saw - No printed parts (it has plastic though; so maybe some of it could be printed )

Are you suggesting that if I use a machined metal direct drive extruder, that my Huxley is not a RepRap?

I am intrigued by your argument that the end effector has to be made by the machine itself; However, I think there will be plenty of folks out in TV land with non-printed hotends/extruders who probably think they own a RepRaps

I never said any such thing and I have no clue how you got that from what I said, you may want to read more carefully from now on. I said it has to be able to reproduce at least part of what is needed for the machine to work. Your work bench is like a neck tie on the miter saw. It has no need for the bench or the neck tie because it will still do its job without it. But the parts of a reprap that are printed are needed or it will not function as a reprap (may function as a hot glue gun but not a reprap).

There is no argument here. A miter saw is not a RepRap. It's just a thought experiment on stretching the bounds of the Definition of a RepRap.

For Sure

A wooden or plastic CNC router made of "routable" parts is probably by definition a pretty awesome RepRap

One or two years ago there was a classification of a "RepStrap". With many people no longer caring much about replicatability, this is apparently almost forgotten. All the designs are still in the wiki, of course: [reprap.org]

I'd say that all tools are awesome, simply by helping us to make stuff and sometimes other tools ^^

Don't like the root design philosophy of the Miter Saw Bench at the top.

There is moment on having only one single 2x6 between the Stand's legs.

I really don't know about anyone else, but IMO, it's all about affordable rapid prototyping at home. Many useful parts can be made of extruded plastic using the simple variation on a 3D milling machine that "in the old days" would either have to be cast in plastic or milled from metal stock.
