Dual Extruder

Ive played with the idea of a dual extruder in my head for a while.

Is there a certain design for a dual extruder, or is it just two strapped to each other?

It's basically just two side-by-side. The difficult part is making sure the hotends are exactly level with each other.

There is one available here: [store.qu-bd.com]
I am thinking of getting their single extruder for the printer I am designing. They have the option to have it preassembled for an aditional $10.

They are just getting started and are in the preorder stage at the moment. Being preassembled you would just have to mount it level to your bed.

Those extruders are only capable of using 1.75 mm filament, but would probably work well as they are based on the Makerbot design.

Unfortunately there are not many designs available for dual extruder setups, as it is highly experimental in the RepRap world at the moment. You can take a look at this, however: [www.thingiverse.com] and use the carriage from the original here: [www.thingiverse.com]

Are there any disadvantages to 1.7mm filament? Their site makes it sound like it is an improvement over the 3mm.

No real disadvantages, other than it tends to cost more. The cost is coming down though so that it is not much more than 3 mm filament.

Improvements over 3 mm filament are debatable. It does allow for direct-drive NEMA 17 extruders though, as it does not require as much force to extrude.
