Arduino Mega drawing too much power
October 13, 2014 07:24PM
Hey all. I've recently run into a problem with my Prusa i2 running on a 2010 MacBook Pro. Whenever I connect my printer to the USB ports on my computer OSX (10.9.4) shuts down the ports because it's apparently drawing a potentially dangerous amount of power. Both ports work with standard USB thumbdrives, etc so it seems like it's not a problem on the computer's end, but I've tried 3 different USB cables and inspected the Arduino USB port for evidence of a short and come up with nothing. Any ideas?

Thanks so much!

Use a powered USB hub.

Did this happen all of a sudden and did the setup work correctly before?

Shouldn't need a powered hub, but the hub will at least let you know if it's a problem with the computer port or Arduino itself without risking further damage to the computer.

it is likely the cable is too long and does not provide enough current. what devices are you powering from the atmega?
