How to auto fan check?

A lot of bad things can happen when a fan stops working. Prusa has had an auto fan check for years now but I am struggling to find any information on how it is done with marlin and some three pin or something fans. Thoughts?

My best work around is to tag an arduino pro mini and use the third fan pin to check the fan speed and then relay that as a filament runout error to the Z-max pin. If the pro mini arduino code works, I can copy and paste it into the config or main page and pray that it compiles and runs?

Since I am in the realm of fantasy, if I can find the filament runout code then I can copy and edit it to a different pin than the runout pin and designate it to say whatever fan that is connected is dead?

... I'll use a LED, beaming through the blades onto a phototransistor - and some sort of "dead man's circuit" smoking smiley
