Can we edit stl files..?
January 05, 2012 01:19AM
Hi,
I downloaded the stl files prusa mendel parts from www.thingiverse.com
I need to make little changes in the stl files, but i couldn't. I converted the stl files to autocad dxf format and made changes in that. But while converting back to stl, i couldn't export. Can anyone help me where to find original dwg or dxf files for prusa mendal parts ? Or is there any other way to edit the stl files ?

Hi,

The openscad source files are in the github project: [github.com]

Be careful which version you require - the master branch is version 2 - version 1 is in a branch called oldmaster

Otherwise, there is a plugin for Google Sketchup which allows you to import STL files (http://sketchuptips.blogspot.com/2010/03/sketchup-stl-importer-redo.html) this can then be exported as STL with the following plugin (http://www.guitar-list.com/download-software/convert-sketchup-skp-files-dxf-or-stl) (Note: when importing STL files you have to explicitly select "millimeters" from the options page found on the file import dialog, otherwise the model will be the wrong scale).

Hope it helps.
