What is the best way/procedure to exchange the filament in a J-head hotend?
I want to switch to a different color but I can not get it out...

Prusa with cast PU parts, RAMPS 1.3, Wades extruder, J-Head hot end

... start the heater and pull it out, when the outer surface gets soft ...

I tried to pull it up with the nozzle warm and I got it up about 2cm. After that it was stuck really hard, I did not dare pull harder. Is that normal?
Is it possible to cut the filament and push it down with the new color?

... you can flush the filament with the new colour, but this can need some ten centimeters of filament, until all old is gone ... and don't mix PLA with ABS or you'll probably clogg your nozzle.

Well, I think that the mixed colors might be interesting anyway, I will try that method, thank you!

I usually the technique that viktor mentions above in the initial reply, but before I pull UP on the filament, I push DOWN about a centimeter to make sure that a good bit of the filament is softened. After pushing down, I can generally pull up pretty easily. Sometimes I have to repeat the technique.
