my ramps came with a taped on diode. I understand to run the Ramps without the USB and with LCD etc. It needs this diode installed. Where do I solder it and which direction?

i think i read elsewhere even after it is installed i can attach the computer to the arduino with out any problems. correct?
You're talking about diode D1, its under the X and Y stepper driver sockets and is indicated on the silkscreen, along with its orientation. You can find assembly instructions for RAMPS on the reprap wiki if you need more information.
