Help with prints?
November 26, 2013 12:01AM
Hi,

i tried printing top part of Eiffel tower - this came out - how come its not clean? Is it retraction issue? what is the issue? I have other print outs that printed fine so im sure this isnt under/over extrusion.

Can anybody help? Thanks in advance!

What are your print parameters?
It seems to me the print is overheating and as a resoult the nozzle smearing the plastic.
Are you using a fan to cool down the print and hot-end?
It also could be a calibration issue with the E axis.

Iam using cura, printing first layer 230c, rest of layer 205C. Print speed And density at 30. infill 60, travel speed 150. Retraction 20/4.5mm respectively. Layer height .1, shell. 08(im using. 4nozzle)

I know it couldnt be E steps because i just recently cslibrated and checked 100mm filament feed precision. thanks!

Looks like you have a Z banding issue. What kind of printer?

If you have Z Linear Bearings, I had the same issue, and I put a few drops of CA glue between the bearings and the X motor mount/Idler, and it completely went away.

Can you post a picture where exactly?

Banding? What is banding? Im using LMK8UU and 2 threaded rods for z-axis. where exactly should i put superglue?

Here is another .5 thin mm wall. How is it?

I think thats perfect.
Mybe you cant try to lower the temp.
I use slic3r and I print all lyers @ 185ÂșC and have the first layer speed 25mm/s, infill 20, solid layers 25, perimeters 20, external perimeters 15.
I use a .35 nozzle so I guess with .4 nozzle you get better flow through the nozzle and actually you can print with lower temps.
I would try with 195 at first and than go from there.

But with the Eiffel tower? how come its like that?
Re: Help with prints?

as tadejv said its getting hot. the layers need time to cool use a fan or try to print 2 at once this will give it more time to cool. lowering print temp some will help also

thanks. ill try printing 2

I have printed this: see attached file

Is this just a bad case of filament? or is there an issue? this is printed at .15mm layer height...

It stills looks like your bed or print head is offsetting in the z axis(aka z banding)... I'll ask the first question again, what kind of printer??

Either the printer is offsetting in the Z axis or your extrusion rate is changing.

thanks for the reply. It is a reprap, 2 threaded rods. what do you mean by offsetting? and z banding? i do not fully understand.
Re: Help with prints?

you have some banding. try to adjust z axis steps to the next full number leave out detail beyond the decimal. errors exist in float process, and how it calculates steps remaining above zero. usually it is negligible if you are using metric rods.

then also check to ensure no slop exists in the z axis direction. push and pull on x carriage, does it move or wobble easily. what about nozzle. while it is hot, does it wobble back and forth?

also lower retraction speed. if this is too high for motor then uneven flow will happen between layers, because of different back pressure.

Yes, almost everything here is a reprap... Just post a picture of the printer.

its a rapidbot orca

what size threaded rods, size and pitch. are you using microstepping? if so what setting, or how many steps per mm.

What does it mean that my Bed or head is "offsetting"
Re: Help with prints?
January 30, 2014 04:00AM
im using 8mm rods nuts, standard pitch. steps per mm is (53.333333333333336,53.333333333333336,3413.333333333333,...

i still cant figure out what is happening

Your e-steps are too high. Basically your extruding to much plastic and it smooshes outward causing the banding. Print a few cubes, lowering your esteps 10% at a time until the banding disappears.

I did see that you calibrated your esteps based on the amount of plastic feeding into the extruder. This method is good for getting your esteps in ballpark but is not a great measure of the plastic coming out of the nozzle.

Thats actually x,y,z values. my E steps is at 169.xxx

I have calibrated to 200mm plastic extrusion using pronterface and marker/ruler.

Measuring the filament going in is only a loose estep calibration. You have to fine tune your estrps further. I have a pile of parts that look like your pictures- but the good news is you're almost there.

Did you print a single wall empty cube and measure the wall thickness with calipers? The wall thickness should match the thickness specified in your slicer program.

If you don't have calipers just Drop your esteps down to 153 (10% of 170) and print a 20 mm cube with 95% fill. Print a few more dripping the esteps about 10%: 138, 125, 112, 100, etc. Make sure you write the estps on the finushed cube so you can compair later. When your parts start to sharpen up then you can fine tune. When your fill lines begin to turn into dots you've gone to far.

Looks like some serious issues with the z axis to me. It looks like the z layer thickness is changing with height. One reason for this could be the z threaded rod/stepper motor might be moving up and down at each rotation. This could happen with an overconstrained bend and misaligned threaded rod. Of course, since we haven't seen a photo of the printer, we're just guessing here.

I would suggest you post a clear photo of your printer. A video of it printing would probably help too.
