Nylock nut assembling

As part of building the lasercut reprap Y axis idler I have to put on a nyloc bolt. I'm having some real difficulty getting it on(I know it not moving is basically the point). Anyone have any tips for getting it on but keeping it's locking effect later on?

The trick I have used in the past is to get a bolt of the same size, put it in a vice.

Then clamp the nut in vice-grips ( locking pliers ) and get the thread started.

Once you have started a thread in the nylon you should be able to take it off and get it onto the idler.

It should just screw on (non nylon end first) if not there is some damage to the metal threads which should be visable test both parts with a known good nut & bolt.
