Are (most) all 1 KG filament spools a standard size?

Before I start making the parts to hold filament for my printer, I want to verify that there is a basically standard spool size for the filament. I am going to work on some ideas for anti - snarl components which may be of help to some of you. Thanks.

No standard whatsoever. Seems like every supplier has spools of different widths and hole sizes and outer diameter.

Doh! hot smiley Any idea about the greatest outer diameter?

the 3 most common spool sizes, in no particular order:

1) 6.5" Diameter, 3.75" width, .78" inner diameter (for the spool holder)
2) 6.5" diameter, 3.375" width, 1.25" ID
3) 8" diameter, 2.75" width, 2.05" ID

..... and then there are the 10" spools ...

I may end up just ordering only 6.5", and reusing when necessary. Space is always at a premium, especially when there's a lot of it.

If you are going to re-spool, you might consider setting up some sort of powered spooling setup.

That's a good idea. Perhaps something based loosely on a bait casting reel setup...drinking smiley

Lyman Filament Spool Winder

On Lyman Filament Extrudurer V3 he uses a Level Wind Fishing Reel

I thought this could be useful...

Universal spool holder for 24 - 56mm holes

Another thing to do as you re-spool - run it through someting to clean any dust / dirt / crud off of the outside of the filament. It's easy enought to do and it won't slow anything down.

That's a great point!

I've seen Filament Cleaners on printers but don't think I've seen them on (re) spoolers

In conjunction with a Dry Reel Holder, the filament cleaner would work great on the inlet to clean filament and seal container.

I have also been thinking to incorporate a Dehumidifier Rod in the enclosed filament holder.

Not sure if this would be beneficial or just overkill?

Those look cool. I like the idea of just using a fishing reel because that double spiral mechanism does not look terribly easy to reproduce. As to the dehumidifier, they are made for boats and RVs, a 19 foot boat for example would be 600 cubic feet or more typically, I would think you would damage the filament with one of those. A light bulb would be a better choice. even then, I'd watch your wattage.

You can get pails of de-humidifier chemical from various places. It's more or less the same sort of stuff in the little packages in the bags. You dry it out in the oven and then store the whole pail with your sealed trunk full of filament. Dry it out every few months and you are good for a long time. A nice big pail should be less than the price of a spool of filament. You can also get pails of stuff that are non-reversable, so you need to do a bit of digging to be sure of which one you are getting.
