Why this part is heated to put in?
November 21, 2014 11:57AM
Hello.
I am a RepRap begginer in Japan.
I am building Prusa i3 Rework now.

I have a question about this building step 3.

X End Idler & X End Motor assembly
[reprap.org]

the instruction says
Slightly heat the nut using a lighter or a blowtorch then pull the rod. Be careful with this operation.

Why this heating process is needed?
I mean, I think bonding the nut to the part is better idea.

I guess the heating process is needed to fix the nut in the part.
but,I think Heating the nut is a little too risky to me.
Because if I heat the nut too much the ABS-made parts will melt too much.
So,I want to use some adhesive to fix the nut instead of heating the nut.

Using the adhesive is bad idea?

If the heating prosess is a must to do,
Anyone tell me the Tips?

Thanks!

Both for the fact that the nut hole might be to small and slightly misshapen as well as to hold the nut because the plastic cools around the nut. If you use adhesive do not get any in the threads.

This is the normal accepted method. If done right it has very little risk but works very well.

zerodameaon san,
tmorris9 san,

Thanks for your advice!

In my case, the nut hole is a little(about 0.1mm? bigger than the nut size.
so the nut can move in the hole easily.
I might need to fill the gap between the nut and nut hole.
(I bought the Prusa i3 kit at REPREKEO
[www.replikeo.com]

Anyway,
thanks to the advices, I confirmd that the nut need to be fixed.
I can continue to build my Prusa I3.

Good, just let the shop you bought it know that the hole was actually too big! This is not normal, it should be a good fit.

Good luck with your build smiling smiley

In my case, the hole is too big. so I need to fill the gap.

Hi,

It should only be heated when the hole is too small, wich is risky, chances are great that you dont burn the nut straight in and that gives issues.
Mine are a bit loose , just like yours, just try it that way, it should be fine.

Govahnator san,

Thanks for your advice!

In my case, the hole was loose.

It seems it will work well.

now, My problem is softwere....
It takes more time to start 3D printing.

I've always seen that the nuts should not be a tight fit so they can pull out of the carriages if the hotend hits the bed. I would not glue them in because the nuts pulling out has saved me a few times when I bumped the endstop out of the way.
