I like the appeal to authority in the blog post, that they talked to Richard Stallman. I suspect he'd have something harsh to say about 3.2, considering Thingiverse basically snags its own non-free license on uploading. Why would Makerbot continue to publish a design the creator removed it? Obvious answer: if it serves their self-interest. And what the terms mean is that if the creator's interesby Mazaw - General
The traditionally cheap option is double-sided thermal tape. Although in my experience it doesn't work very well for heat conduction. I don't have any heatsinks on my Sanguino/Stepstick electronics, but for other uses I've always used Arctic Silver thermal epoxy, mixed 50/50 with Arctic Silver paste. It's plenty strong and the mix of the two lets me separate them later.by Mazaw - General
I must not have noticed the eccentricity before. Or, perhaps coupled with the metal couplers it's just amplified. Before picking up some stainless threaded rod I'm definitely going to try nophead's coupler design. My steppers are notched from the factory (maybe it's called a D shaft?) but I don't think that smaller arc of tubing making contact will affect it too much.by Mazaw - General Mendel Topics
I was switching from regular M8 nuts (part of the vitamin kit from MixShop, so I'm not sure if they're zinc coated or if it matters in the slightest) to brass nuts and I talked myself into installing springs for the Z axis while I was in there anyway. Previously, I just used two nuts on the bottom of the X ends. Now that the springs are installed, it seems to be binding a bit more and the threaby Mazaw - General Mendel Topics
How long are your X smooth rods? I was able to continue the build by adding an extra set of nuts on the top threaded rods spacing the Z motor mounts farther out from the vertexes to match the extra X distance. The threaded rod at the bottom was just barely long enough to clamp the Z smooth rods in the appropriate place.by Mazaw - Reprappers
I guess I'm reading that what's good for linear bearings (with ball bearings inside) isn't necessarily good for the Z lead screws and vice versa. That is, a light grease for the bearings with a light oil for the Z leads. I'm under the impression that I'm not really going to need to grease the bearings as often as I will need to oil the leadscrews since I didn't use brass nuts: I think nophead useby Mazaw - Reprappers
Hi, Just finished a Linear Bearing Prusa Mendel Iteration 2 build (short of a functional hot end, but I'm working on it), but this should be relevant to any design that uses linear bearings. I'll admit I went bargain hunting on the bearings on ebay and got a pretty good deal and I'm very happy with the performance of them. The Z leadscrews, on the other hand, squeal quite a bit and I'm ready toby Mazaw - Reprappers
Is the lubrication on the smooth rods sufficient or have you developed some dry sections? Are your pullies worn? I'm curious what it could be... Did you regenerate the gcode since the first print, or are you using the identical generated file as before?by Mazaw - General Mendel Topics
Gotta say this, and the wide variety of derivatives, is what got me here. If something goes wrong with the hot end, I've got half a dozen other domestic vendors selling varieties that I can adapt. Meanwhile, my first printer developed a problem that eventually lead to me having to order replacement parts from overseas, either at insanely expensive but fast shipping or (the option I picked) insaby Mazaw - General
I am building an iteration 2 now and noticed the same thing. Since I don't have the ability to cut rods with any kind of precision, I added another set of nuts and spaced out the Z motor holders to match the extra length. The Z smooth rods, then, had to be spaced out in the same way but the threaded rod at the bottom that holds them was JUST BARELY long enough to let this happen. While not therby Mazaw - General Mendel Topics

I found interesting info here, A Woodworker’s Guide to Tool Steel and Heat Treating. Yep, there's definitely a voltage difference. I guess the question really is whether I should be concerned about it or just slap a heat-sink on it and pretend I didn't notice. I actually hadn't measured the +5V from this particular USB hub before and it's pretty disappointing (4.6V). Dollar store special strikes again, it would seem.by Mazaw - Sanguino(lolu)
Hello, I thought I'd try my hand at putting together this board and I've got Sprinter loaded onto it and, as a quick test before installing it, it's sending instructions to the motors and I'm quite pleased. For the test, I've hooked it up to a bench power supply at 12V and capped it at 250mA. Without the USB cable attached, it pulls a mere 40mA. When I plug the USB cable in, it hits 160mA powerby Mazaw - Sanguino(lolu)
I found this link to be of great value when I was starting. While Ultimaker centric, it's still a great write up. http://techwall.net/ultimaker-3d-printing-workflowby Mazaw - General

How are you fabricating those non-extruded aluminum metal parts? The gantry, print-bed bracket, etc? Or are they available off-the-shelf somewhere? They look really sweet.by Mazaw - General
