Hybrid tooling (3D printing + milling) patented ?!
September 18, 2013 11:11AM
Hello guys!
I'm a long time lurker but I'd like to contribute now.
I've searched but found no result on this:

If I understand this correctly the patent covers if you use a machine that can both 3D print and mill, right? So all those new mahines on kickstarter like the:
or
[store.qu-bd.com]

Are they infringing their patent?

Mods, sorry if I am in the wrong subchannel.

I believe it's a machine that performs both operations on the same model. i.e. prints a layer and mills it, or prints a model and mills it.

I have seen a youtube video for a mill that does this which is prior to 2012, and people have been retrofitting their cnc mills with 3d printer heads for years. I therefore would assume this patent has no legs and could be easily contested.

I do admit that I didn't read beyond a few paragraphs though so may be mistaken.

I personally worked on such a system some 20 years ago, I think the patent system in not fit for purpose anymore., it was intended to
facilitate the advance of ideas and technology, whilst protecting the inventor, the oposite now seems to happen, with patent trolls etc,

feel better now I have had my first moan of the day.
