Is it possible to have a heated bed on a Mendel?

Is it possible to have a heated bed on a Mendel?

As the title says, well asks really. Is it possible to have a heated bed on a Mendel? The reason I am asking is because the heated bed is seeming to become more and more mandatory, especially after seeing nopheads results when printing abs on an heated aluminum bed covered with Kapton. And the since the Mendel has a moving bed with a lot of printed parts beneath and maybe other sensitive parts, I am wondering if a heated plate would damage electronics, and how would one protect the printed parts under it?

Not really mandatory with PLA at all. ABS needs it for the larger pieces. Anything that can be done on makerbot can be done on Mendel, so yes, I will give you dimes to donuts that Hot Mendels will be running around in the next few months.

Thanks for the comforting reply, well guess I'll have to wait and see now when the mendels will start popping up.

Someone should start writing that stuff up on the wiki, probably.

I was thinking about this and how another thick flying cable could be a pain to the Mendel mechanism thinking of using a low voltage 24V DC drive supply.

As all the main parts are plastic feeding the power without extra friction to heat the heated bed could easily be done using the two Y axis slider bars and the two sets of bearings on each side as the power pickups for the heated Bed.

Once my Mendel build is printing I will try this as the connection method six skate bearings on each line should keep a constant connection avoiding any sparking.

Don't try this at home yet as I may not have thought of every thing that could go wrong with this idea yet!!

Certainly not with any higher voltage drive than 24 Volts at least.

I think you would get pitting on your guide bars and bearing races with this method.. also, since the bars are usually greased with silicone, you may need to find a conductive grease, something with graphite perhaps.

May be using "copper slop" The Garage guys slang for this stuff...

I use this on the Bertha CNC [www.carlube.co.uk] random PDF on this type of grease [www.mpmoil.nl]

I use it but have never tried it for conductivity there are plenty of warnings on line suggesting it is conducive but this could be due to its descriptive name.
