You are correct. The build stage will pass above the stepper and mount at Ymax.

Also, the machine I'm building uses 500mm extrusions because I wanted to make something that has a larger build envelope. 400mm extrusions and M8 axes are still the standard. A 400mm machine should be able to accommodate up to around ~ 300mm wide drive and build stages, providing plenty of room for leveling mechanisms and a standard PCB heated bed (215x215).

Once the larger machine is up and running I'm going to scrap my Prusa and upcycle it into a 400mm Prism.

Working on the wiring tonight. Once that's done it's really down to finishing the Y-axis drive and build stages - and the 300mm square heated bed. We'll see if I did my math right...

Hi everybody.

Can anyone tell me their opinion on prism vs mendelmax?

After far too long futzing, I have my prusa mendel almost functional. Sooo, next step, since there are 3 of us sharing it, is to build another one, right?
I have been investigating options, and since the frame pieces on the prusa, being allthread, have always been a bit flaky, I thought I would go extruded aluminum for the next one.

I don't think you can go wrong with either one. The MendelMax is nice and has good support (quite a few have been built), but the prism is a bit simpler using all the same length extrusions.

Prism Mendel 1.5

Instructions and source files available.

Source files were generated with 123D.

First working Prism 1.5.

Oversize Prism 1.5 coming online soon.

Excellent work on the visual guide akhlut, thanks a lot.

Now I can recommend people to build a Prism even as their first reprap !

Most of my technical comments should be correct, but is THIS one ?

Thanks!

I wanted to include the X,Y and Z-axis setup, but didn't as there are so many variations. That and the fact that the Prism I'm building now is not a standard size and doesn't use standard parts - don't want to confuse anyone with oddball hardware.

Also, going back over the build guide I've spotted several minor errors, so there will be a v 0.2 coming out soon!

I finally got back to building my Prism... I have all the axis attached. Electronics are fully functioning. Need to make a case for the RAMPs with alum extrusion mounting options. The I will work on the Bowden extruder and the build surface. I hope to have it done by Thanksgiving... smileys with beer You can see pictures of the build at the following link:

Once I cleanup the OpenSCAD files for the Makerslide plastic parts, I will update my github prism branch (https://github.com/egenoup/Prism-Reprap)

Paoparts, when this happens, you can just navigate back up to the user github home and check his projects list : [github.com]

By the way, I'm going ahead and asking for a specific Prism Forum.

This post is going way too long now.

If it's easy, I'd say yes.

Otherwise we could just post a sticky in the newly created forum to point here.

I still can't view the github page - could that site be any crappier to navigate?
OK, works now - operator error smiling smiley

Has anyone got an assembly of this machine in something like step or iges format as I would love to modify my machine to an extruded frame?
Re: Introducing the Prism Mendel

martinp, the sources are in Autodesk 123D format, check on akhlut github.

If you really need step or iges you'll have to do the convert job.

Martin,

123D can export to those formats. Which would you prefer?

I think step format would be nice as it preserves the assembly structure better and seems to be the new standard for higher end CAD systems.

An upload in .step format to grabcad would certainly raise the profile of this printer.

edit. I downloaded and installed 123D and now have a copy in .step format. It doesn't convert exactly, but there is sufficient to get me going. Thanks
