The latest lucid, its in the package manager, I prefer lucid to slacko but would change at the drop of a hat if needs be.by johnrpm - General
I have installed python and it seems to run ok, and have downloaded skeinforge, but I am in the same position as you, I have never really got my head around the linux file system, and when things go wrong I struggle to find the answer, then get frustrated and go back to windows to get the job done. I did notice blender in amongst the packages and ubuntu has the arduino ide, so someone with a brby johnrpm - General
I have tried both, lucid and slacko, and they both work on this satellite pro spa40, I have not gone beyond exploring so far, but I am impressed with the speed and lack of bloat, everything just works, its put the fun back into computing. I am under strick orders to get the patio done, so do not have time to experiment much at present.by johnrpm - General
This is not fair... After reading this thread I tried puppy linux, I love it, I have spent hours playing with it, when I have a stack of other things I should be doing, its running at blistering speed on an old laptop I literally took from the scrap bin.by johnrpm - General
is worth a look, you may find something, cnctoolkit is good but not easy to use, cambam has a free version and paid version, freemill is ok for some types of work, you may finish up with a collection of software to do different jobs.by johnrpm - CNC Routers, Mills, and Hybrid RepRapping
Human bone is a very good example of nature minimising weight and maximising strength, I know that a lot of research is being done in this area, developing algorithms and multi material structures.by johnrpm - General
I like this concept, it would be good for generative art, thanks for posting the link.by johnrpm - Developers
I have stripped down old printers that used this type of quick screw, its begining to look like it will be out of my price range, but its looking like a real quality machine.by johnrpm - General
Great stuff, nice concept to use the belt.by johnrpm - Paste Extrusion Working Group
I agree with you bobc, its one thing to have a concept but to make it reality is another, having said that it may well happen in years to come, but for now I'll stick with the achievable.by johnrpm - General
A poll - well, it would be outdated next week. Maybe...... I know Reprap is moving at a pace, but did not realise at such a fast pace, software can move at a faster pace than hardware which tends to take longer. Take for example a question on extruders which type of extruder do you use a b c d my own design other the result may indicate the most common extruder/s and newcomers may decide to goby johnrpm - Developers
Just had a very quick look at the phorum site, looks like they have a poll module which could be added, would need an admin to do it of course, then their is the sticky question of what questions to ask ????, Mmmmm, maybe a can of worms.by johnrpm - Developers
PS. This is an interesting and needed discussion, and I really appreciate everybody's responses. it's the only way to know what the community is thinking. Thats why I suggested a poll.by johnrpm - Developers
I must admit that I do think... Not another 3D printer company?!?! But you have a good atitude in wishing to be part of the community, I hope you do well.by johnrpm - General
Why not put up a poll on the index page, with sections such as firmware, extruder, etc, this may show the most popular setup and maybe indicate to new users a possible avenue to follow.by johnrpm - Developers
Many years ago (20+) I worked on a system that used glue sticks, the setup was basicly an air cylinder mounted above a heated tube with nozzle all on a cnc miller, I sourced about 8 different types of glue stick, from flexible to ridgid in different shades from white to grey. I made a boot for a gearshift out of the rubbery material, worked well for prototype stuff but had a limited life. maybeby johnrpm - Polymer Working Group
This looks fascinating, yes it looks like a good candidate for printed electronics, must read the paper and maybe have a play. Thanks for posting the link.by johnrpm - General
I am a bit slow to think of this but can the resberry PI run a version of EMC2.by johnrpm - EMC2
I always feel a little sorry for the new person who is very excited about the idea of a personal 3D printer, then they start to feel a little overwhelmed by all the options Yes indeed, a safe or starter option that results in a working system for new builders would be good, like most things its best to start with something that works and then when they have gained experience start modifying firmby johnrpm - General

What if we had a station, with a small roller or horizontal disc, where the fillament is extruded and opticaly measured, for each layer.by johnrpm - Printing

Thanks Viktor, I have not decided what to use it for, it was offered and I just could not say no, would it be any good for cutting or sintering???. 3 watts sounds like a reasonable amount of power.by johnrpm - Laser Cutter Working Group
Thats a nice plotter Viktor, Wish I had such nice toys, having said that, I have been given a 3watt argon laser, very old so may not have any gas.by johnrpm - Laser Cutter Working Group
johnbiehler, thanks for the link, I had not seen it, as the processing power of phones gets better, and the price of second hand phones and tablets get lower, more uses will come to light for them, please keep us informed how it goes.by johnrpm - General
I have a rasbery on order, and look forward to having a play, but for reprap I can't help feeling that smartphones would make the ideal controller, would need an interface but phones are made by the million and are available in africa etc, plus they can send and recieve files. P.S I wish the Rasbery Pi boards were made here in the UK, I would be prepared to pay extra to keep the manufacturing heby johnrpm - General
Is this intended to be similar to thingiverse, what type of license will it have.by johnrpm - General
Victor I don't think wpflum was referring to you, I do agree that polymers degrade with recycling, but the problems can be overcome, I worked in the moulding trade during the first oil crisis and we had to overcome the problems to stay in business, so I would say do some experiments to find the practical problems and ascertain the solutions, then decide if its viable. last year I workedby johnrpm - Reprappers
