I use HeeksCAD, and OpensCAD, both of which are open source and free. If you don't know how to code HeeksCAD is wonderful, if you do OpensCAD is wonderful. If you can, and cannot code, then you are a paradox, and must go away.by spacexula - General
Microwave works off water content, PLA SHOULD be uneffected by microwave because it is hyper dry(please don't test this). Microwave JUST excites water, that's why it heats the middle more than the outside of food. ABS is pretty dry after extrusion, so again should not respond much (at least till it erupts in flames and kills your family).by spacexula - General
Wow, if I go with Bushings instead of bearings, I will be able to knock 20 dollars off the cost, reduce the rp parts by 1/3 (some were between 20-25 peices TOTAL), and add 10mm to the Z axis. I think I am going to have to move to bushings... bye bye 70% of the work I have done to date What brought this on was prusajr's photo of his/her X axis. beautiful! $800 (sorry I am American), at that price you COULD afford a Techzone or Makerbot kit, but I think there is a better way to spend your money. 1st check the Hackerspace Map and see if there is one within a decent trip of you. If there is try to partner with them to get started 2nd mine the RepRap and Makerbot google maps, and try to get again someone within a reasonable distance to help you, anby spacexula - General

All bowden to date to my knowledge have had 1/16 inch walls. You want the ridged wall because it reduces flex due to the extruder.by spacexula - General New Machines Topics
Those are all 1/32 inch thickness walls. you need at least 1/16 inch so that your cable is rigid. The cheapest Mcmaster carr sells is 52365K615, which is $3.23 a foot. MSC is $2.89 a foot. It's not huge, but I am trying to get the cost down, and ever few dollars helps.by spacexula - General New Machines Topics
No, but this one would. (you need 1/8 inch ID) Wow, good catch. That's 1/2 the price of Mcmaster carr, and they have more varitety.by spacexula - General New Machines Topics
Techzone = Botmill electronics and kit, and they are in the US.by spacexula - General
Get an extruder off Ebay, sugjest Wades. Makerbot wants too much for their steppers, I personally went with Alltronics: They don't carry the ones I bought any more. The new options are cheaper and have more torque. If you go the Techzone route with your electronics, update the wiki as you install them, the documentation is still sparce.by spacexula - General
BTW the Xerox Mendel died a fantastic death when one of my steppers got hot enough to melt the wax, wax went inside the stepper, and ignited. I lost my work bench, and had to replace the drywall above my work table. Spacexula has a habit of suggesting very stupid and dangerous things.by spacexula - General New Machines Topics
Here is a recipe for the stuff: have been working on the Xerox Mendel for a bit, and I keep running into issues with the wax shrinking too much. I found out that I need to let the Wax cool down slower, which makes it leak out more. I am going to have to find a good balance. Found this website: they have a great description on how to make machinable wax at home. All you basically do is melt Lby spacexula - General New Machines Topics
Makerbot can be reliable, but JohnA, you must admit, your an outlier, your the Forrest Higgs of Makerbot at this point . I really want this dude to get into our hobby, but I want him to go in with his eyes open. We have all seen the blogs, how many half completed home brew repstraps, Darwins, Mendels are there in the world? How many of those 1500+ makerbots are collecting dust because someonby spacexula - General
Ok. Let me show you how much makerbot really costs. The $950 kit is worth the difference, if you get the $750 kit you will HAVE TO spend at least $100 more, if not $150 to get it operational. So the $950 kit is worth the money. You will NEED to purchase at least 1 extra hot end for it, because Mk4 eats hot ends every so often, so that's $60 more by the time you get your nozzle, barrel, PTFE/Peby spacexula - General
Adman234 a lot of people try to do that. Makerbot is hard to keep operational. It's not quite that easy to buy a makerbot and get it to break even. That's ALL I have tried to do, and I barely stay even, much less make the money back from the makerbot. As a very active Makerbot owner I must say Sebastian's sugjestion might be a good way to go if you are mechanically/electrically inclined. Ifby spacexula - General

Which would you prefer? Prinstruder is easier to hook up, but you really need to get a Makerbot Worm gear if you use that. Wades you have to make your own worm gear for, and I can really only print the version because I have a Cupcake. You name it and I will print 2-3 up and put them on ebay tomorrow.by spacexula - General
Sorry your right, I have a stack of them here. I thought you meant metal round springs, sorry.by spacexula - General
Yes they can be reused IF you don't monkey with your bot and change your skeinforge attributes in the mean time, and IF you are printing from SD, and IF you print a second Mendel. Most people get sorta sick of printing Mendels after 2-3. Remember even if you sell them for 3-400 you still dont' make minimum wage. peer Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Plus aby spacexula - General
So... What if I where to mount the extruder above the x trolley? Say like this . The tube would be almost perfectly straight for the 1st few layers, and the higher you go the more bend that would occur. Mini Mendel is already pretty restricted on the Z axis anyway, so shouldn't be hard to mount the extruder 300-400mm above the top of the machine. Is this worth trying? Every foot adds cost,by spacexula - General New Machines Topics
Sibastians 36 hours assumes a very fast machine, 25mm/s is the average most people get so 50+ hours is quite common. For Makerbots Mendel is 24 plates, each taking around 1-2 hours (some take 2.5). Rapman does mendel in 6 plates, both assuming you are running HBP, if not then you likely have to print over 30-40 times. For each plate there is at least 2-4 minutes worth of set up time, (if it'sby spacexula - General
The main reason I am looking to put the extruder on the X axis (but not on the trolley), is so that I can use less PTFE. If the tube is only moving back and forth with the trolley, not back and forth and up and down I should be able to shave 1 foot off it's length, which in a project where I want to have a Pololu Electronics option that allows for $300 printers, every $5 counts Now I have to pby spacexula - General New Machines Topics
I am the one that set up that Ebay search... dang... I wonder why that one didn't come though, need to go look at the settings. Cast is far from the real thing. Resin cast is MUCH more fragile than lasercut or RP. Cast also very much limits spread of production. If a viable lasercut design is available, almost every college student on here can print one at the university, and the "rest of us"by spacexula - General
My wife has took to calling it Brutis, because what I have together so far looks so beefy A few design questions, I didn't know if anyone had a good answer. -On the Mendel, the thinest part that holds a NEMA 17 is the X solid end bracket, and it's 5mm. Other parts are in thicker brackets, and have side supports. I take that to mean that the minimum a nema 17 should have would be the 5mm/no sby spacexula - General New Machines Topics
Great responce as usual Sebastian! Htimstyler, trust me the community is going 15 different directions trying to fix this situation. We have 3 different versions of laser cut Mendel not ready for prime time.
