Plastic is cheap. Print one out, test it, make refinements. It'll probably be faster than theorizing about it.by JohnA - General

15 mph winds on both days -- 90° F on sat, 69°F on Sunday. Dusty and dirty, printed for 22 hours straight with a single failed build the whole day. The problem? The dust clogged up the vents on my mac, it overheated, and crashed. Swapped in my netbook and kept on chugging. The only thing I had to change on the machine was to wipe down the build platform between prints (just water and a papby JohnA - General

We had a great turnout, including MakerBots, Mendels, an Isaac with HBP, a Huxley, a laser-cut Mendel, a Drill-Press-Only Mendel, a MakerBot with single-board electronics, and MakerGear's new prototype test unit. Lots of pics here: Three of us won Editor's Choice awards, and we were interviewed by a number of media outlets.by JohnA - General
Photos of the Thing-o-Matic start here: (there's a few in the set) All of the specs are up in the makerbot store as well.by JohnA - General
Yep, dual toothed wheels has been tried at least on a MakerBot: - pic - detailsby JohnA - General

Almost nobody runs endstops on MakerBots (they don't even come as part of the kit any longer) so at the moment almost nobody has the ability to locate like this. > > The platform should be in a fixed position always > when you roll the conveyor belt, so that's when > I'd mesh the gears between the bed/conveyor belt > and the external motor. Making a full set of Mendel still won't be easy, but this will definitely help things. Can't wait to see it in person at Maker Faire.by JohnA - General
Recent photo from today: Completed and up and running with our new 8" square homebrew HBP. Working great.by JohnA - Reprappers

It's heresy around here, but you can just run MB firmware and then ReplicatorG works just fine. That's how I'm running my Mendel. Printed great,by JohnA - General
Got our prototype heated build platform running today and it worked on the first try. Right now it's just 8" x 8", but we can step up the size easily. Still working on some wiring, but I'm very excited about the result so far. (pic links to bigger version)by JohnA - Reprappers
Got our first proof of concept up and running. Worked on the first try, seems to be great. Still working on wiring for now. This one is 8"x8", but we should have a bigger one by next week.... (image links to higher-res)by JohnA - General
After reading this whole thread, we've ordered parts to build our own heated build platform. After printing for months on Makerbots with HBPs, it feels like a necessity now for ABS. I hope to have pics and tests in two weeks or less.by JohnA - General
Took some tweaking to really get the machines.xml file dialed in right so that a 20mm square is the right size - but now we've got it. This mendel has now printed it's first working Mendel parts! Been a while since we dealt with rafts and such, but a homebrew heated build platform is already in the works!by JohnA - Reprappers
they have a thingiverse account now and are uploading sample pics, and they look great. allegedly their plastic is similar to stratasys plastic -- i wonder what the difference is...by JohnA - General

First working print photo! Not bad for something that was just a bag of parts about 10 days ago. higher-res: This is after swapping out the paxtruder for a normal MK4 Plastruder. This is untuned in any way to this bot other than some guesses at machines.xml settings, so it should get better as we goof with it. Single wall thickness is .83 -- not far from what I'd expect.by JohnA - Reprappers
Another set sold! Our last set for a while is mixed black and white: Same as always -- lots of upgrades, all printed on HBP so they're smooth and flat. This is our fifth full-size Mendel set. This will be our last set for a month or two as we stop to focus on MakerFaire NYC.by JohnA - Plastic RepRap Parts for Sale
I should have print videos in the next day or two. Decided to swap out the Paxtruder for a MK4 Plastruder. Installed a set of Mendel paws ( ) to raise it up today.by JohnA - Reprappers
......and.... it prints! Needs some adjustment, but it's laying down great rafts. Not bad for 4 days work!by JohnA - Reprappers
A pic of it almost completed! Click for full-size.by JohnA - Reprappers
After printing 7 Mendels (2 mini, 5 regular) for sale, my father and I decided to build our own. We were waiting on new shipments of black ABS, so we decided to go a different route with this one. Physical assembly started this past weekend and as of this evening we can: - jog all three axes - heat up the extruder - drive the extruder motor Currently this Mendel is running MakerBot electroby JohnA - Reprappers
Crossposted, my apologies: For any RI / New England folks who may not have seen it, there is going to be fairly large "3D Printer Village" area at MakerFaire NYC. These are great tips for us to know! We'll definitely use some of the ideas from your cards too. I requested a spot under cover, so hopefully we'll be out of the weather. mccoyn Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I did a Mini-Maker Faire the last couple of years > and one thing I regretted was not having business > cards to hand out when people ask wby JohnA - New York City RepRap User Group
