well that was short lived!
printed 2 pieces and now it's back to the way it was.
I have noticed that my entire hot end moves. like, (when it's cold) I can wiggle the nozzle by 1 or 2 millimeters.
the connection between the heatsink and the wade's extruder is not tight.
is this normal? if not, any ideas on how to make this tighter?
thanks

well, I made sure everything was tight. it was.
I looked for anything catching or dragging. didn't find anything.
then in a hail Mary attempt, I greased the rails.
problem went away.
decent prints now.
thanks for the help.

Printing
hello,
I'm using a mendel i2. things have been going well until this past weekend.
I did a pretty nice t-rex skull and then I started getting really bad prints.
It started with this:
which is weird because it cleaned itself up. I didn't do anything and it started working.
now everything looks like the bottom part of the print in the pic.
I've checked pulley set screws, belt tension, jerk

ok.
I finally got back to it. My extruded pla measured .52mm
I set the diameter up to .45mm and it helped a lot, but I think it could go even more.
how much does pla expand? is .45mm a good number, or should I go higher?
thanks.

I have calibrated, and my Z is set correctly.
Every layer has problems. A print eventually sticks together enough to maintain its form, but it looks horrible.
If perfect is Rembrandt, this is a toddler trying to copy it with chalk.
Something I just thought of...
My previous printer uses lead screws. How tight do the belts need to be to prevent backlash?

Printing
Hi all,
I just finished building a mendel I2. I'm in the testing & tweaking stage now.
When I print, instead of extrusions that bond together I get individual lines that do not connect.
On a 3 perimeter print I can see blue tape between each perimeter extrusion. My solid infill looks like a basket weave instead of a solid print.
To me, it acts like I'm starving the extruder.

I may have figured it out.
I swapped out ramps boards. problem went away.

Hi all,
I have a home built 3d printer. It uses Arduino mega, ramps 1.4, and A4988 step controllers.
things have been going along nicely until last weekend.
I was doing a print that took about 24 hours, and when the print was finished, I homed the print head.
x and y worked great, but when the z started down, it was very erratic, and then it just stopped.
I ended up swapping out A4988's and

Hi all,
I'm adding a proximity sensor for Z min.
it is a DC6-36V PNP NC 4mm Unshielded Inductive Proximity Switch LJ12A3-4-Z/AY
the signal wire reads 12 volts when the sensor is NOT triggered. 0volts when triggered.
I have z min endstop inverting set to false and the pullup resistor is NOT defined.
when I use m119 in repetier, if NOT triggered, it reads TRIGGERED, and when triggered, it r

so, I changed out all of the electronics. new arduino, ramps, stepper drivers.
I built it up one piece at a time testing as I went. all worked well.
as soon as I turned on the bed, I lost usb connection.
I reduced the max bed power to 1 and I still lose connection.
It has to do with current flow because if I disconnect the bed wires, and then turn the bed on in repetier, everything works fi

well, I clipped D1.
problem solved (hah, hah)
it solve the problem short term. I can move and print again.
however... when I enable the heated bed, I lose usb connection sometime after the bed reaches operating temp.
I have verified that it will print with the bed off.
my next step, I think is to add a very small amount of resistance to the heated bed so it doesn't draw 45+ amps.
any advi

ok...
blink worked under usb power.
blink worked under 9volts through power jack
thermistors are giving data back to repetier
end stops work
applied only 12volts 5amp power -- usb connection lost.
unplugged usb and re-connected. windows said it didn't recognize the device.
killed the power and used usb, worked fine.
any thoughts?
what if I clipped D1? I don't use an lcd screen.

Thanks for the great advice. I'm out of town right now. I'll try all you suggested when I get home.

Hi all,
I built a 3d printer a couple of months ago.
Everything has been going great.
the other day I added a heated bed.
I printed a part using it, and everything worked great except I started losing steps.
the heated bed was drawing so many amps it was pulling the volts down causing the steppers to lose steps.
so, I started changing power supplies to better supply the proper voltages to both r

ok, I tried your suggestions with no joy. I know it's not bad advice, it's me.
here's what I've tried...
I tested my feed rate by marking off 50mm on the filament and then telling repetier to extrude 50mm. this was at 92.5 steps per mm.
it fed 46.5mm. (note: at this feed rate, my perimeters look good, but the solid infill swell the perimeters and the nozzle drags through the infill.)
BUT,

Hi all,
I have a consistent problem that I need help with.
whenever I do solid infill the nozzle ends up dragging through the previous layer.
I have printed 10x10 test cubes where the final layer infill is 1.5mm higher than the final layer perimeter.
how can I change this?
things I've changed...
infill speed was too high for my printer. I think slic3r thought I needed more filament for a h

JamesK, your assistance did the trick! everyone else too, but thank you for pointing me to the spot in code.
for some dumb reason, I thought max x was the distance it travelled right after homing.
thanks again.

can't try a different value right now, but I will later tonight.

I hate to be a bother but, I've been through configuration.h 6 times.
can anyone give me variable name, or the general location in the file where this parameter is set?
thanks.

oh yeah, it's calibrated.
I'll look for the max x setting. any idea where it is?
thanks.

Hi all,
I recently built a 3d printer out of an old cnc mill that I had.
I'm using an arduino mega with ramps 1.4 to run it. I use repetier for the host.
my bed is over 900mm long and I have set it that way in repetier.
when I try to move in the x direction it will only travel to 450mm and stops.
this occurs both with a manual move and in gcode. with gcode, the program continues to run but
