Thats a pretty old version of Marlin, its currently at 1.1.8 !
1.0.1 is not a version I'm familiar with but having had a quick look there is a similar section which deactivates steppers after 60 secs by default ?, could that be set to 20 secs ?
//default stepper release if idle
#define DEFAULT_STEPPER_DEACTIVE_TIME 60

I've been looking at alternatives to Slic3r over the last few days and the 'Prusa Edition' looks quite good, many new features especially for multi-nozzle printing and as o_lampe has said they seem to be pretty active with bug fixes and updates with very regular updates.
I'm also looking at Cura but can't get on with the user interface having got used to Slic3r !

Have a look at configuration_adv.h, there is a section there which configures the steppers to shutdown after usually 120 seconds ?
// Default stepper release if idle. Set to 0 to deactivate.
// Steppers will shut down DEFAULT_STEPPER_DEACTIVE_TIME seconds after the last move when DISABLE_INACTIVE_? is true.
// Time can be set by M18 and M84.
#define DEFAULT_STEPPER_DEACTIVE_TIME 120

I'd like to incorporate brass threaded inserts in my designs (M3), any tips on using on them and UK supplier suggestions for small quantities ?

Sorted !
I did a search for '120' (2 x 60 seconds) through the Marlin code and found DEFAULT_STEPPER_DEACTIVE_TIME 120 in configuration_adv which switches the motors off after a period of inactivity. What I don't understand is it was present in the old version I have used for ages and didn't seem to cause the same problem ?, never mind its sorted now.

I've just upgraded from Marlin 1.1.0-RC3 to 1.1.8 and I'm getting some sort of timeout occuring. I home all axis and then after approx 2 mins the motors switch off and the display shows flashing '?' for the axis positions ? I can rehome all axis and the same thing happens again after 2 mins ?
I've also tried V 1.1.0-1 and this behaves in the same way but V1.1.0-RC3 is fine ?
Is there a timeou

Yes I found in config_adv and have managed to configure a 2nd Z endstop but only by reassigning the x max endstop. I haven't figured how to keep both. Unfortunately I'm an electronics person and struggle with the software side of things. I'll probably be able to sort it on Monday when I can ask a software colleague (watch out Alex !).

thanks for that slippy, I've managed to configure the 2nd stepper by defining pins for a 3rd extruder, though it would seem better if you could directly assign the pins to the 2nd stepper ?, if I change the number of extruders the Z driver will change !
I'm now stuck trying to configure the 2nd Z min endstop, I've posted a question on the Marlin section but no answer yet ?

I'm trying to setup Dual Z Endstops in Marlin RC8
I've uncommented #define Z_DUAL_ENDSTOPS in configuration_adv.h Now when I send M116 I get a z2_min status but x_max has disappeared ?
Looking a couple of lines further down in configuration_adv.h there is a line #define Z2_USE_ENDSTOP _XMAX_, I assume this is causing x_max to be reassigned as z2_min ?
How do I assign z2_min to a new pin and k

I've almost finished upgrading my printer to 24V and at the same time I've added an additional 6th stepper driver and second Z MIN so that I can experiment with dual Z stepper homing.
I've also added an extra FET output so that I can drive the heated bed, both extruders and a fan.
My question is, is there a standard/preference for pins to use for the extra stepper, Z MIN2 and extra control outp

I measured the faulty cartridge right at the point where the wires disappear into the ceramic and it reads 6.1ohm so the crimps are fine.
The leads are blue, E3D currently list 12V/30W and 24V/25W cartridges with blue leads. They don't list a 12V/25W cartridge although as you suggest it measures as if it was ?, perhaps they used to sell 12V/25W and this one has got mixed up with new stock ?

After more time spent swapping bits around I've tracked the problem down to a faulty heater cartridge proved by cannibalising my Cyclops extruder. The two good cartridges measure 4.8ohm, the faulty one is 6.1ohm's.
Wonder if E3D will replace the Cyclops cartridge ?

I've been struggling with this on and off for over a week now but can't get to the bottom of it, one of the extruders on my Chimera suffers from Thermal Runaway whilst the other is fine ?
I'm printing the 'Icicles' retraction test (thingiverse 607968) in PLA at 205degC. It fails everytime at layer 7, the temperature gradually falling from 205 to 198 after the fans start on layer 4. When printi

There is no safety risk with 24 Volts, the current is irrelevant, at least as far as electrocution is concerned, and whether its AC or DC is not an issue either, see the US current wars in the late 19th century.
Thanks for the suggestions of alternative pick-ups but I'm planning on reverting to a 'traditional' wired carriage and running 48 Volts to the heater to reduce the current and wire size

I did carryout a quick test with the bearings but the volts drop was quite high, 2-3 volts, and they started to warm up so that was aborted quite quickly !, I imagine the plastic carriers in the bearings would have melted soon after.

Hi all
When I started designing my printer I wanted to keep the wiring tidy and had an idea to eliminate the wiring completely from the Y Carriage.
I have fed power (24V) to the carriage via the rods and picked it up using pairs of silver plated RF screening fingers on each side.
The Heater is controlled from an on-board analogue PID controller, the front panel has a temperature setting knob a

Over the last few days I've been trying out ABS for the first time on my new PrintBite bed which has worked brilliantly for PLA.
I've printed a couple of Marvin's with no sticking problems but then tried printing the 'Solidoodle 4 to e3d cyclops and chimera' fan duct/nozzle off Thingiverse but it kept coming away from the bed after a few mm's. Eventually I spotted what was going wrong, I was ge
