with the new firmware probably I have to change some settings.... movements and speed seem different ....
I got good print with 1.08b-zpl too...I did not yet understand exactly what has changed
back to previous the printers are working fine...
for the Z support ...yes ...0,5 standard speed (50% of the speed on the first layer only)

I think I might be seeing what is more buildup on corners and angle changes, as thought it is accentuating the edges of the triangles in the model.

**edit** might be the current filament I am using, just trying something else and this stuff is "stringy"

But can you still suggest a ballpark change to the M556 line?

Hi Dario, what quality problems are you seeing?

I have had a number of users saying that print quality is better using my 1.00 and later firmware, compared to RRP, zpl, and my pre-1.0 series. I have also had some reports that my later versions slow down more when changing direction by less than 90 degrees. This is entirely possible, because my 1.00 and later firmware honours the settings for maximum instantaneous X and Y speed change when changing direction, but the other builds do not.

If you think that slowing down more when changing direction is affecting print quality, then you can always increase the allowed instantaneous X and Y speed change, using the M566 command. In my fork, these do not affect the minimum printing speed.

Hi Dario,

1. After some more testing, I've now increased the defaults to X1800 Y1800.

2. I found a bug in the Move code that causes the printer to slow down more than necessary sometimes. It's fixed in the 1.09b release candidate, which you can get at [dl.dropboxusercontent.com].

I fine tuned the filament settings last night for some cheap filament I bought for test printing, it turns out it prefers a much lower print temp. However the part of the accentuation of edges remained, as if the head was moving too slowly so a build up occurred.

That new firmware and the increase in the M566 has produced a much crisper print for me, thanks Dave.

..my two printers still have the stock Z-axis hight but yes I did secure the connection between those axis on both, pulling the extrusions tight together with a 4mm screw, changed the z-foot for an aluminium one and added a "set square plate" in between the two extrusions

It's a good opportunity to print models so high...drinking smiley

unfortunately I have no other space available..... for a delta too

I did not name the tread, "static65" did that, I'm all for expanding the printer in any way possible, Ormerod to the Mooon! :-)

Yes I could do with a bit more hight as you can see from this horror print where I, on the fly while printing, had to loosen the screws and carefully lift the upper z what-ever-its-called thingie to finish the print - and still it left the poor girl with a solid dent in the upper command center

Comparision pic of old vs new firmware with part of the standard "owl" test smiling smiley

The creases in the "wood" are about 1mm max at the edges, with the previous 1.09a you can see buildup and glitches the new one on the right is considerably better.

I'm glad the changes improved things. I have now released 1.09b, see the thread I just created. I am now using M566 X1800 Y1800 Z30 E20 on my Ormerod and I think there may be scope for increasing the X and Y values further.

Thanks again btw, as I said better prints are just a bonus to the fast homing, got real tiring waiting for it, especially when I forgot and left a homing action in the g code so it did it twice.

Forgot to say I did a test print at 100% and the ones in the pic are at 150%, no discernible difference.

Also with the newer firmware when it did the small moves the motor sounds stayed constant whereas with the older ones it sounded strained as I guess it was slowing down.

If you go too high with the M566 values you will eventually start getting missed steps. You will probably hear that something is not right if this happens.

Slic3r will take ridiculously long to slice if you tick the "avoid crossing perimeters" box. Leave that unticked and the time becomes sensible even for large models.
