Is 1.5kg to 2kg pull / push good enough ?

Is 1.5kg to 2kg pull / push good enough to extrude thru an extruder head that is 4mm long and 0.6mm in diameter reliably?

Testing the new splined shaft in my perspex clone of the Mendel extruder block with 3mm ABS gave a maximum of 2kg an average of 1.4kg of pull measured before the ABS starts to be eaten away by the splined shaft.

Now we know that Wade has achieved 5.5kg of pull without slippage.

So whats the difference.

I think the difference is both Wade and Nopheads extruders have a spring tension er to control the pressure of the grip.

The standard extruder has the pressure set by setting up the gap to be 2.5mm between the bearing and the splined shaft using a drill.

As the stepper showed no sign of stalling I have now set the gap to be 2.4mm using a 2.4mm drill this had no effect at all so I'm not sure what else to try.

At a guess I think you will just about get away with it for ABS and PLA due to the 0.6mm aperture.

Some figures for a similar arrangement here: [hydraraptor.blogspot.com]

Thank you ! Nophead.. I just took a few mins away from the project your reply is just what I needed to come back to...

So I'm now going to add the element to the new shorter Welding tip using my last piece of nichrome wire this being my fourth element I have made now.

With any luck I will get my first fully functioning extruder working tomorrow.

Hopefully trying to get the rest of Mendel together will distract me from 24 hours of no caffeine. As I'm going for a hospital test on Monday, not looked it up on google yet. So I wont even try to spell it from memory.
