Considering the speed of the thing and the sudden stops and go, I would bet on pneumatic combined linear and rotary jack. After all, Staubli has been the best the european specialist in that domain only for 50 years and they used this kind of actuator heavily in they textile dobby looms and weavers.

304 stainless steel for smooth rods is not overkill but even a bad choice if using ball linear bearings., as this type of steel is not hard enough. For Igus bushings it will be ok but not needed.
You need either a high chrome/vanadium rod or a 100C6 high carbon + chrome(european spec) hardened and grounded one. Dont know what is available in USA, but this kind of rod is very easily found here in

Problem is that to get good speeds without needing too much power you need either a conical shorter auger or one with a variable pitch (the latter is how injection molding machines works, the former is used in drawing extruders). This way the back part of the screw is under less pressure and so friction
One idea I had was to use the augers from a meat grinder (usually conical auger, but some hav

Check for an option for working in mm. it seems you are in inches here
dont have sketchup, but stl dont state unit only that the dimension of the part is XXX units. Obviously skp convert it to inches here

Beside the milling approach, my personnal philosophy of design for parts more complex than a plate with a single hole is as follow :
- design the functional surfaces in their main direction and only that, iow hollow cylinder if I need a hole. The part here is disjoined.
- trim those in secondary directions as needed, eg the hole depth could be dictated by the bushing used
- add the connecting s

Well as there is no electricity beyond 12V in a reprap,I think you can get away by labelling the stuff as laboratory equipement which remove the need for CE markings even for pre-built ones. The 12V source need of course to be CE certified.
In the machinery directive, the worst part would be electromagnetic compatibility inspection requirement which is quite a bit costly. So we want to avoid th

I'm pretty sure I have seen a swiss system which used an H-bot drive due to speed constraint. Used either for packaging or feeding. Used vision to detect parts orientation and act accordingly. Cant find the reference though, and that the sole example i can think off

Hi,
I suppose the ceramic inner tubing has a quite low roughness ?
If so, you could, I think, ditch the PTFE liner for a Korolon 800 or equivalent coating. it can be applied with a spray gun, has a very low friction coefficient and can withstand >370°C.
No idea about price and availability though, saw a paper about it some times ago. It is quite hard once dry.

To be opensource, you need to provide an exchange format I agree, so releasing only the solidworks files is not enough (in fact with the nasty habit of Dassault to change the format each release, you cannot open a say 2010 file with a 2007 release) so even them can need the exchange format.
Stl is not ideal, as it preserves only the outer shape, but the normal exchange formats in CAD are .IGES a

For friction, it is a matter of coefficient of surface contact.
On a rougher rod, there is more microscopic peak and valleys (on stretched rods, more valleys than peaks). A fair amount of valleys is important as it decrease t

Standard stretched steel rods, not chromed are good enough.
